It’s a quick newsletter this week for you all. Less than a week to go now until the big day! From us all in the shop, we hope you all have a great Christmas and all the very best for 2019. Many thanks for all your support over the last year. Just for your information the only day the shop will be closed is Christmas Day but if it is quiet, we may be closing some days a little earlier over the festive period.

Now on Sunday night it was the carols service in the clubhouse and for some reason, I was given 6 geese a laying. All great fun but if you can bring yourselves to watch this quite funny video you shall see me on a few occasions trying to actually lay an egg. Well that was the idea! Sorry and enjoy…

Club News

Halfway House Painted

Can I just give a big thanks on behalf of the Club to Tony Close for painting the halfway house this week.

It really does look fantastic now and he has done a great job. He hasn’t charged for doing this which really is a great gesture to the club.

Thank you, Tony, not just for this but all you do for the Club.

New Golf Rules Afternoon Presentation

On Tuesday 15th January at 2.30pm, Hornsea will be hosting a “New” Golf Rules presentation. There are quite a few changes to the rules and this will be a great way of trying to learn and understand them more.

This presentation is being done by Ruth Goodwin, who is one of our county handicap advisors to England Golf, and from what I have been told she is very good at getting the information across. It would be great to see the clubhouse full of members not just from Hornsea but any other golfers that are members at any other local clubs are also most welcome to attend.

Catering and Clubhouse News

It is great to see the clubhouse busy with different functions etc. Over 50 people had Sunday Lunch last week and all enjoyed it. Others have used the clubhouse for Christmas parties, birthdays and funerals.

Over 100 people are now coming to the New Year’s Eve Party, so yes, it is busy. Jonny and Emma really are doing a great job. If you are a member and have something coming up in the next year that you want to celebrate, don’t forget as a member you can use the facilities for free.

Please see Emma if you would like to discuss what she can do and what dates are available.

Christmas AM AM

So in 24 hours’ time we should know the winner of this year’s Christmas Am Am.

Let’s hope the weather is kind and good luck to all that are playing. If you would like breakfast beforehand please contact Emma on 07824 880488.

Food will be available to purchase after the event, chilli and chips should warm us all up!

Boxing Day Bring And Win

Last year we had a great turnout for the Bring a Prize, Win a Prize competition. It really is a great way of walking off the excesses of the day before and also helps to clear a few heads. It is great to see members and guests playing in this event.

Remember, no green fee is paid on this day but a prize to the value of £5 or more is enough to go and enjoy 13 holes.

I wonder if the café clock might be back as a prize on this year’s table. It seams to make a yearly appearance each year. I can’t remember who won it last year though. Times are available from 9.30am to 10.30am. More times will be made available after if these all get taken.

Pictures From The Course

No pictures this week. It would be great to see some festive ones sent in over the next few weeks though.

Greens

What another week of strange weather for the greens staff to contend with. Heavy rain, wind, frosts and at times quite warm. This does make it difficult for them but compared to other local courses that have had course closures and trolley bans so far, we have been ok. Those that have played will have noticed some raised ropes around the course. This is to help direct golfers away from sensitive areas and also to stop some trolley users from blatantly ignoring the ropes.

Many clubs now use raised ropes because of this. As for other things happening on the course, lawn sand was applied last Friday which included a turf hardener to help against disease and also includes iron to help green the greens up. Work is also being do to the right of the 14th green to replace the old drainage pipes. Weather permitting the greens this week will be slit and cut.

Sand saviour

When you see your ball roll into a bunker, don't worry if you tend to get nervous about your next shot; it happens to a lot of golfers. It's one of the reasons that hearing TV commentators say "he'll be happy it's finished in the sand" is so frustrating.

Obviously, these players practice day-in and day-out and so their skills are naturally going to be at an extremely high level - Ben Crane led the way in 2018 with a 66% sand saves success rate.

So how do you get better? Well, alongside having a bunker lesson to ensure your technique is correct, using a wedge that is designed to make bunker play easier - such as Callaway's Mack Daddy PM Grind - is key to getting up-and-down more often.
