Greetings from Stretton Wright
Hornsea Golf Club - Director of Golf at Hornsea GC

Many thanks to all who commented on our first newsletter last week. It's great to get feedback and I enjoy reading your comments. Please if you have anything you would like including, see me or email me. I need the information before Tuesday morning for it to go in though. If you hear people saying they have not received the newsletter, please get them to give the Pro Shop their new or changed email address. Sad to say but it looks like the weather is changing. I for one don't like the way the nights are drawing in so quickly and the temperature in a morning has really dropped. This Saturday also saw the last Gent's Medal of the year. Maybe a relief for some!! When I put the sign out on the 1st October for "Preferred Lie's" you know winter is coming!!

2's Club - Neil Turner and Jim Clubley £16 each.
The conditions on Saturday deteriorated though the day so well done to all that made it round. Great effort by Phil Cross though who came home in 34 Gross. Can I also thank everyone that played on Saturday for all returning your card's to the computer and putting them in the box. Even if some where a little damp! It does make the checking of cards and completing the competition so much quicker. Sunday was a fantastic day after a cold start and it was good to see so many entries for a Sunday competition. I hope this continues. Can I please ask though, that if you enter a competition you return your card to the computer and then put it in the competition box, even if you no return. Thanks to those that didn't for contacting me to apologise.

Captain's Challenge

On Sunday 5th our Club Captain was away for our challenge match against Colin Evans and Keith Parry so the Vice Captain, Alan Barker stood in. It was a little chilly stood on the 1st tee at 8.30 but mine and Alan's golf was a little too hot for our opponents in the first 5 holes which saw us take an early lead by 3 with 5 bits. It's a good job we got off to that fast start though as the final score was a 2 and 1 win with 6 bits. I really enjoyed the morning and a big thanks to Colin and Keith for their good company and very generous donation to the Captains Charity.

Hull & District Golfing Association

The 3rd event of the year was played at Cave Castle last Thursday 2nd October. A fantastic score of 62 by a pair from Cave Castle, I Gray and E Gott won by 3 clear shots from a pair from Hessle. The best score Hornsea could manage was a 66 from Stuart Branton and Mark Cooke. This keeps Hornsea in 2nd place in the overall standings but now 6 shots behind Cave Castle. The next event is on Thursday 16th October at Ganstead Park and we will need a good score. Our teams are;

8.00 S Middleton (4) & P Sellers (8)
9.07 S Wright (0) & S Branton (6), P Lockwood (8) & L Ward (14)
10.07 D Close (0) & T Close (12), M Train (10) & A Bird (12)
11.07 A Rosindale (2) & J Robinson (5), A Dickinson (13) & M Russell (16)

East Riding Golf Alliance

The next event is at Hull Golf Club on Wednesday 6th October, and our teams are;

9.36 A Rosindale (2) & S Middleton (4)
9.44 M Edgar (7) & C Wilson (13)
12.16 S Uzzell (0) & M Train (10)

I shall report on how they got on next week.

Greens

With the weather changing you would think that grass would have started to stop growing. All you still see though greens staff doing is non-stop cutting. The greens are been cut every day, tee's and fairways twice a week and the rough is been continually cut every day. Gareth also hopes this week, weather permitting, to continue in cutting and removing the grass from the mounds, 16th is done, to tidy the grass around the bunkers and hopefully a light spike to the greens. We are still looking for an apprentice if anyone has any ideas so we are still working short staffed. Big thanks to Terry Cutts who has offered his services in the interim though

This Friday 10th October see's our Club Chairman taking the reigns of a Race Night. The event starts at 7.30 with the first race at 8.00. A few snacks will be available but food is not included. It would be great if people can come in tables of eight but everyone is welcome to attend. All money raised is for the charity, Great Ormond Street Hospital. Please support this event if you can.

Wednesday 29th October is a quiz night at the club. This is no ordinary quiz. This is going to be a Grand Autumn Quiz. Please make a note in your diaries. I should have more information next week.

Work has started this week on the main flat roof of the clubhouse. This has been a problem for many years with it leaking and has been patched up on many occasions. This time it is being covered in a 18mm sheathing plywood overboarding and then covered with a EPDM butyl rubber liner and comes with a 25 year guarantee.

Myself and Yvonne are away at the Golf Trade show in Harrogate for a couple of days. We are both looking forward to seeing what is new for next year in the way of clothing and equipment.

During the last week we have made a few changes in the shop and a big thanks to Nick Tudor for helping. It's not often you get something for nothing these days but Callaway Golf have supplied us with some nice slat walling and fittings which really helps to display things much better. Please pop in and take a look. Most of the winter stock is now in and is already going down well. Make sure you don't miss out as I can't guarantee that companies hold much stock these days.

www.wrightgolfshop.co.uk is a great place to look at most of our stock if you are short of time every time you play. Not everything we stock is on there but most of it is.

Paul Gibson - PGA Teaching Professional

Another good week for Paul who yet again should be on commission for producing another prize winner and a reduction in handicap. This week it was Kev Taylor. If you have not done so yet you should take a look at his own website www.paulgibsongolf.co.uk His blog this week makes interesting reading and he is planning a winter golf coaching break to the Algarve if anyone is interested. I'm sure there's a few of you that would benefit from it and enjoy a bit of sunshine too.

If you are thinking of having a lesson with him please do not hesitate to contact him on paulgibsongolf@hotmail.co.uk or 07745 543940. Alternatively you can come along to one of the many group sessions I am doing; here is a brief description of when they are:

Wednesday 5pm - 6:30pm - Open to all (whilst the day lights allows)
