Stretton's News A very varied newsletter this week for you all and be warned Nathan will be doing most of next weeks as I’m away at my sister’s wedding. We have three family weddings this year which will keep us busy. |
The Masters So, who ever doubted Tiger would win another Major? Funny for me as I must admit I didn’t particularly like him when he really did just dominate the game for so long. Then with everything he went through, I really couldn’t see him ever getting his game back in shape. Amazing though that he has done so and just show’s what hard work and dedication can do. Oh, and a little bit of talent! The scenes at the end of play on Sunday were truly amazing and not something you would normally expect. He really is back and has given golf a bit of a buzz again. Well done Tiger.

Masters Par-3 Last Sunday brought about the annual Par-3 competition. Now this to me and many came to me after and agreed is something great to do as a change as it puts a real test on your short iron play with a couple of longer ones thrown in. Sadly, this a test I failed to get past after a terrible 8th hole, however lots of others did. There were some great scores that came in with conditions not great with a strong easterly wind. It was Kevin Bond that is now the Hornsea Golf Club Par-3 Champion and received the Malcolm Parker jacket that Craig Gawthorpe donated in his Captains year from Mark Barrass the previous winner.

Monday Night Texas Scramble - Monday, 20 May In years gone by, these events were really popular but they have struggled in the past few years; so, it would be nice to see a few more entering this year or it could be the end of them. The sheet is now up in the Rolston Bar to enter, please support if you can. Click here to view start sheet.

Captains Challenge Our challenge this week came from Alan Beaumont and Dave Blanchard Snr. It was a great game and the banter started early before any shot was hit. They set off really well and we found ourselves two down after eight holes. The ninth hole though saw a bit turning point in the game as both Al and Dave Snr missed really short putts handing us the hole. We then won, ten and eleven to take the lead and never looked back in the end winning 3&2. There were a couple of memorable moments which I’m sure Dave Snr won’t mind me mentioning! Dave Snr on the eleventh said “I’ll just knock this in”. He was in the competition and his ball was six inches from the hole. Four putts later ball still wasn’t in the hole! He then had a little bunker trouble on seventeenth taking a few to get out but great to see he still continued. Never lost his temper and still returned a score. Great entertainment for the three of us though! This was a big game as I know the Captain would have taken quite a bit of stick from his dad if we had lost. A great game though and another W for us. |
Seniors Captains Cup Well, the cup was competed by probably one of the best turnouts for a long time. According to Peter Bridges the most in all his time. We had twenty entrants. The winner was Ray McKie with 39pts with a back-nine of twenty. He just pipped Pete Acklam (39pts) by one. Barry Bedford was next on 36pts who beat me also 36pts. Barry got it with a back-nine of eighteen to my seventeen.
It was a great day enjoyed by all. Regards Gordon Thanks for the report Gordon and well done Ray McKie.

Hull & District Mixed Greensome On Monday, quite a few mixed pairs from Hornsea went to play at Brough in the Hull & District Ladies Alliance Mixed Greensomes. We didn’t quite manage a win but Angela and Terry Clappison came in third place with 38pts which was only a couple behind the winners from Cottingham who managed 40pts.

Yearly Weigh In For those that don’t know, each year on New Years Day we have a “Weigh In” for those that want to enter to see who can lose the most percentage of weight. Eleven people entered this year with the final weigh in been last Sunday after the par-3 competition as agreed on New Years Day. Rees Brown was this year’s winner as he had lost the most amount of those that got weighed on Sunday. He has managed to lose 9% of his original body weight. He put it down to lots of running, eating better and he still managed to drink the odd pint or two. Well done Rees.

Tuesday Boys Away Day
On Tuesday, 16 April, the Tuesday Boy's had a day out to Kirkbymoorside where they played for the annual Dave Allon Trophy. Four players managed to score 36pts round the testing course but it was Lindsay Ward who had the better last six holes and lifted the trophy. Second was Tony Barron and third Peter Mounfield. Thanks to Dak Roberts for sending in the report.
|
Fire Evacuation On Sunday, we had to evacuate the clubhouse due to the fire alarms going off, this was not a trial run, Yvonne walking in just as it went off was a complete coincidence! Can I thank everyone for leaving the building quickly and without too much complaining. Everyone did gather on the patio though which isn’t actually our fire point, in future if you can assemble by the Professional Shop. This will then enable the emergency services to enter the building unhindered and keep everyone as safe as possible, if ever required.

Putter Demo Day Something a little bit different for you all is coming to Hornsea as we are going to try a Odyssey putter demo day. This will be taking place at the end of May. Details of exact dates are still to be confirmed.

Pictures From The Course Hopefully by the time you receive this, the weather if the forecast is correct should hopefully be warming up. The cold wind we have now had for weeks really isn’t helping the condition of the course and we could really do with a bit of rain too. For the early risers amongst you we are still having the occasional light frost too. We have been receiving some great comments on the course though which have been published on social media which is nice considering the conditions the greens staff are contending with. The course is looking good though with a nice definition currently been achieved as shown in these pictures. |
As well as keeping on top of the cutting to all the playing areas including all the pond banks, the greens have been sprayed with a mixture of iron, seaweed and phosphate and a granular feed has been applied to all the fairways. 160 bags were used at a cost of roughly £27 per bag just to give you all some sort of idea of how much doing this sort of thing costs.

|
Course Comments We also received this email from one of the seniors that played in the Open Betterball last week. I would like to congratulate Hornsea Golf Club for such a well organised seniors competition on the 10th April. Everything about the day was excellent, the organisers were very welcoming and efficient in administering the score cards and the returned results.
The leaderboard was kept up-to-date.
The catering was excellent, the catering and bar staff were very polite and efficient.
The course was in very good condition for the time of year and the greens staff should be congratulated for all their efforts.
Thank-you very much for all the hard work to present such a good days golf.
Regards Ray Hempstock Doncaster Town Moor GC

How Much To Be A Member At Augusta
Finally, I thought I would just add this link in as I know all golfers would like to have their course in the same condition as Augusta! It does come at a cost though and is only open for roughly eight months of the year.

Do you often find yourself stuck between clubs? One club will launch too far beyond your target whilst the other will leave you short. If so, you're either very unlucky or you need to come and see us for a gapping session. |
| Example of poor distance gapping
|
|
Distance gapping is the art of putting your set together whilst ensuring each gap between one club and the next is equal. Take your wedges as an example. Say you have a PW with around 46 degrees of loft and sand wedge at 56 degrees; this 10-degree gap could leave you with a distance gap of around 30 yards or more! What do you do if you need to play a shot right in the middle of those distances? The same can be said at the other end of your set, but usually this will involve two clubs going the same distance. If you have a 3-iron in the bag as well as a hybrid and a 5-wood, chances are you'll be hitting them similar distances - so it's time for one to go! If any of this is resonating with you, then let’s get you booked in before you head out for your next round.
