Stretton's News A slightly different newsletter this week as we approach the summer, and hopefully we have some good weather again. A lot of you will know my brother Kenton who is the Professional at Driffield, but many of you won’t know that a few years ago he was treated for melanoma/skin cancer. He is ok now, if you were wondering, but still goes for regular check-ups and has to take great care whilst out in the sun. With this in mind, along with another PGA Professional, he has recently been involved in a campaign to try and raise awareness and also show the importance of making sure you are protecting yourself from the sun whilst out playing golf. This is something that is very serious with more and more golfers suffering due to the time exposed to the sun whilst out golfing. Please take your time to read all of the below.

Golf unites to raise awareness of UV risks Skin cancer is a global epidemic and the most serious form is melanoma, which is doubling every ten to 15 years. To raise awareness of the risks, a new sun protection campaign for golf has launched, offering specialist tips and advice to encourage better habits. Slip! Slap! Swing! was devised by the Melanoma Fund and is supported by 9 leading golf organisations, working collaboratively to promote a multi-national media campaign, targeting the UK's 4 million golfers. The sport is on the hot spot as:
- When: A round can lead to prolonged sun exposure during the hottest time of the day. - Where: Courses provide little shade, and highly UV reflective surfaces such as grass, water and sand. - How: Players tend to avoid reapplying sunscreen to avoid a ‘greasy grip'.

Many golfers believe their skin is ‘seasoned’ from years of UV exposure, or protected by a base tan, however, the highest mortality rates from melanoma, are in older men who spend a lot of time outdoors, are less likely to use sunscreen, check their skin, or visit their GP with a concern. Julia Newton Bishop, Professor of Dermatology at the University of Leeds, says; “Over exposure to the sun can cause all types of skin cancers, however it is sunburn that is scientifically proven to increase the risk of melanoma by 50%, especially in those with skin which burns easily or with more moles than average. This vital campaign is a wake-up call; it is never too late to look after your skin.” The campaign's top five tips are:
1. Keep sunscreen (SPF30+), sunglasses, a hat and large umbrella in your kit bag. 2. Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before teeing off to ensure it is effective. 3. Reapply sunscreen every two hours using a sunscreen applicator to keep palms dry. 4. Use a chubby sunblock stick to protect lips, nose and ears, which are all prone to burning. 5. Check skin every month or so and if you spot any changes, visit your GP immediately. Jamie Cundy and Kenton Wright are two PGA professionals who have both survived melanoma. They feature in a short awareness film to launch the campaign with the message; 'when you focus on your swing, it's easy to forget about your skin, however, lowering your skin cancer risk should be just as important as lowering your handicap'. All 2,800 golf clubs in the UK have been issued with awareness posters and will be urged to share the film and campaign link on-line to their members. With summer heat-waves becoming more common place, the aim will be arm golfer with the facts on protection, early detection and prevention of melanoma and other forms of skin cancer, keeping the sport healthy for everyone. For further information visit: www.melanoma-fund.co.uk/golf from the 8th May.

Driffield Country Fair
Last weekend, my brother and myself thought we would try something a little different by trying to take golf to the community by attending Driffield Country Fair. Now Saturday I must admit was a bit of a waste of time as the weather was terrible, so we ended up abandoning before the inflatable nett blew away! Sunday despite being cold though, was a much better day and it was great to see so many trying their hands at golf that had never tried before. It created a lot of interest with many people and we even became part of a live radio broadcast for doing what we were doing. I’m sure many will now try again and hopefully we have created a bit of a buzz about golf in the local area. We did have some interesting characters at time trying!

Bank Holiday Mixed Invitational
Many thanks go to Paul and Wendy Lockwood for organising and running this event and another thanks to Wendy for sending in this report from Monday. A great victory today saw Jill and Keith Marshall and their team mates of Charles and Anne Robinson from Cave Castle pick up first prize in the Invitational Am Am. Their score of 81 was well ahead of the second placed team of Sally and Adrian Bird and their partners. Third place went to Norman and Angie Hinch and the Neilson’s. Although a small field, this was a hotly contested competition it would be really good to see more entries next year.

European Tour Fantasy Race To Dubai David Prescott led the way this last week which helped him move slightly up the overall leader board. It is Mike Smith though who continues to hold his narrow lead at the top over Paul Duckworth in the overall standings. Another reasonable week from me though, and I’m now up to third. The next few weeks will be interesting as some big points at stake.

Keeping You Updated... We have again received many very complimentary comments about the course this week from members and visitors in what are very difficult conditions for the greens staff. At least we now have had some rain but with temperatures remaining so low the full flush of growth really hasn’t started. For those that have played at other courses, most are struggling but Gareth and his team are doing a cracking job here considering the weather.
|
Pictures From The Course A few great ones this week from Paul Duckworth who last Saturday braved the very windy conditions and went up in a light aircraft from Leven. He was kind enough to ask to fly over the golf course and took these great pictures. |
The next is of Wendy Lockwood who found herself in a slightly tricky position whilst playing at Hainsworth Park. I don’t really know how she got her tee shot into this position but I guess the look on her face says it all!

Finally, I have a video of Steve Prout playing from the 16th ditch. Now he does really well but I must say I was a little disappointed as I thought he was going to get covered! |
It's Not Just About Golf
Many of you might not know but we have a snooker team that represents Hornsea Golf Club. Last week they won the Pete Devine Trophy which is a season long team knockout competition. Congratulations go to team members Paul “The Break Builder” Lockwood Jnr, Ian “The Power” Lockwood, Nathan “The Cue Master” Wright and Dave “The Digger” Prescott. A big thanks also must go to the team manager Brian Lockwood for doing all the organising and keeping the team focused.

It doesn’t matter whether you struggle to break 100 or are targeting rounds in the 70s, a set of custom fitted irons will go a long way in helping you achieve your goals. For those of you who think you're not good enough or haven't been fitted before, here's a rough guide to how a custom fit session works. |
| The rough guide to a custom fitting |
|
• Step 1 – Let’s talk. We use this time to familiarise ourselves with your golf game, your goals and about your current set of clubs. • Step 2 - You take to the floor. Yes, it's that simple - you hit some golf balls with your own irons so we have a baseline for comparison. • Step 3 - Hit the latest and greatest. Once you're nicely warmed up and raring to go, we'll give you some irons to try that we think will strengthen your weaknesses and improve your strengths. Take Callaway's Big Bertha irons (2019) for example; this super game-improvement iron is their easiest to launch distance iron that is packed full of forgiveness. • Step 4 - Time to dial in. When we've found an iron model that is outperforming the rest, we'll try out different shafts and lies until we get the perfect make-up for your game. • Step 5 - Your new irons. Once you've got your hands on your new set, we'll keep in touch to make sure you are 100% happy with your new purchase. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s take your iron game to the next level in 2019 with a custom fitting and let’s give Callaway’s Big Bertha irons a go to see if they are right for you. . |
