Greetings from Stretton Wright
Hornsea Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Well as I write this on Tuesday morning Hurricane Gonzalo is not quite as bad at the moment as what the forecast suggested. I do wonder if it will get worse though as the day goes on. Things on the golf course are starting to slow down a little now so it will give me chance to get caught up on all those things that have been growing on my jobs to do list!

A couple of quick reminders for you all. Firstly the Saturday Winter Stableford starts this Saturday and I will be collecting the £10 entry fee in the shop for all those that want to enter. Secondly don't forget you can all have an hour longer in bed this Sunday as the clocks go back on Saturday night. Real sign that winter is on its way.

We are so lucky at Hornsea though as quite a few events have been cancelled due to other courses being closed etc. I shall always try to keep members of Hornsea informed if this is the case by letting you know on twitter, on the BRS booking system and posting it on the clubs website www.hornseagolfclub.co.uk as soon as I know. We didn't close last year and it would be nice to think that would be the case again this year and not to have to get this sign out again this year!!

Wednesday 8th October 2014 - Hornsea Seniors Open

Congratulations to all participants in the Seniors Betterball Open. We had a break in the weather and had a fine day for golf, the course had held up well following the recent rain, congratulations to Gareth and his team for keeping the course in great condition.

Malcolm Hestor and his team of assistants from the Senior Section had arranged a full field of players, a halfway house, car park attendants, spotters out and about on the course and a welcome team giving out, accepting and checking completed cards. A big thank you to Malcolm and his team, the meticulous planning made the day run smoothly. Thank you to all who donated at the Halfway House, you raised a fantastic £110.87 for our Lady Captains charity, which this year is The Daisy Appeal. HULL & DISTRICT GOLFING ASSOCIATION

The meeting that was due to be held on Thursday 16th October at Ganstead Park was called off and will be played this Thursday weather permitting. I shall report on how we get on next week.

EAST RIDING GOLF ALLIANCE

The meeting that was due to be held at Springhead on 22nd October has also been put back until next week. It's becoming hard work sorting the back log and getting information to everyone. If it's played report should be done for next week.

There was no challenge this week and that was probably a good job. I had been to Richard Paces wedding the previous day and I must admit I don't think I would have been on very good form for an 8.36 start!!

It was a great wedding though and I would like to wish all the very best to Richard and his new wife Gemma for the future.

Leaves, leaves and more leaves!! Main job is clearing them every day at the moment and this will continue until December Gareth thinks. I would like to think the strong winds today (Tuesday) should shift a few though!! Greens are now been cut / rolled every other day now growth has slowed down. The height of the fairway cut has been raised a little and the top field will receive a trim when the weather permits as it seems to be growing quicker in that field. All bunker banks have been fly mowed and all bunkers have now been edged. The hedges around the course are now nearly all cut and dyke banks are been tidied up. With the softer conditions can all golfers start thinking about where they are walking and taking trollies. Ride on buggy users please stay in the rough where possible and avoid the wet areas. Please also keep ride on buggies away from tees and greens. Pitch marks are becoming a real problem again. Can everyone please try to repair at least one per green. Thank you.

Another reminder for those that like to test the old grey matter. The Captains Grand Autumn Quiz is on Wednesday 29th October. 8pm start. Teams of 4. Entry £10 per team.

The sheet is up in the bar for the Captain's Finale Dinner now. Saturday 15th November. Cost is £22.50 each and included is a 3 course dinner and coffee. The entertainment will be provided by the ever so popular 'Inflations'. I for one can't wait to see them again as they really are fantastic and an act not to be missed.

PAUL GIBSON - PGA TEACHING PROFESSIONAL

It's always nice to see Paul getting good reviews and this is his latest. Might be worth investing in a lesson or two if you are struggling. Take a look at his website too. His blog this week is very interesting about eating on the course. www.paulgibsongolf.co.uk

Here's what Bill Templeman had to say

"Having played golf for more years than I care to remember, and having reached a 'typical' club standard. I have always been reasonably happy with my game and always enjoy my time on the course. Until one day, mid-summer, out of the blue....shank....then another, and another.

Where did they come from? Can't say I have had a problem with it before. It was getting so bad I was sweating that I may even shank my putter.

I tried all the advice from playing partners, dragged out all my old golf books (usually Christmas presents) to find a cure. Looked on-line, at all the golf guru's. I tried doing so many things I was getting completely confused. The shanking now was affecting other parts of my game. So much so that I called it quits for about a month, hoping that after a break it would go away.

I came back completely refreshed but not so my game. The shanking was still there although I felt I was in control and could enjoy a round without getting over stressed about it. Not so. It came back with a vengeance. I knew that if I couldn't sort it out, I might as well give up.

I spoke to Paul and he suggested that we took a look at one or two things to see where the fix might lie. What absolutely miffs me is that having tried so many things, played so many grotty games, lost about a month of golf, Paul spotted it within about 10 minutes. He had me swinging with confidence right away. Having told me my 'cure' I even tried to hit a shank and found it very difficult.

So I have to say the best lesson I learned was, it doesn't matter how long you have been playing, or how good you think you are, swallow your pride, go back to school, see a teacher and do your homework. I'm glad I did. I've got another lesson booked as you never know how you might improve. It was a quick fix for me that worked a treat. Thanks Paul"

Junior half term coaching

With school half term next week I am running 2 Junior Coaching Camps. The first is on Monday 27th and the second is on Friday 31st. Both sessions are from 1pm until 4pm, cost just £10 and refreshments will be provided. This is a great way to cover all aspects of the golf game, whilst having lots of fun!

Give the shop a ring to book your children's place!

Course Pictures

Can I just give a big thanks to Ian Sizer and his wife Wendy for sending me some great photo's of the course this week. They are much appreciated and will be used on the clubs website etc. If any other member have any good photo's I would love to see them. I might even start a competition if I get some good ones. I do think the one Ian has taken of the tower would take some beating though.

Steve Uzzell

Steve has had good year so far and is currently lying in 10th position on the 2014 Euro Pro Tour order of merit. After a few good results and his first win on the tour in the Kingspan Concra Wood Open event he travels to Egypt this Sunday to play in the Tour Championship. An event for only the top 60 on the Euro Pro Tour. A good result is what he is after as a top 5 finish in the overall standings would see him gain his card on the Challenge Tour next year. Full details can be found at www.europrotour.com where you will be able to follow all his progress next week. Good luck Steve.

Advertising Opportunity

Not sure if any of you saw it but there is a banner that is available to advertise your company/business each week at the bottom of my newsletter and we can also advertise on our website. The newsletter gets sent to nearly 1,000 people and so is a great way of advertising and generating added exposure for a local business. Please contact me if you are interested.
