Welcome to this week's edition to Hornsea Golf Club's weekly newsletter. We hope that you're having a good week both on and off the golf course. Enjoy the read.

Stretton's News Good afternoon all. We tried something a little different this last week by having a week of golfers being able to try various different Odyssey putters and Callaway wedges. They have all gone back now but those that tried all seemed quite impressed. Can I thank Phil my Callaway rep for allowing us to do this and it will be something we will do again next year. |
Last week it was my birthday and Yvonne had organised a surprise BBQ on Saturday night for me. Anyone that saw me on Sunday, can I apologise as I was very tired as it is a long, long time since it was daylight before I was heading for bed and I don’t operate very well on only a couple of hours sleep! Thanks though to Yvonne and all who attended it was a great night. As I am writing this on Tuesday I am just about back to normal!

Range Balls A comment was made outside the shop recently about how much the shop is now making on the range balls. All money made from the range balls is actually going back to the golf club, and since we have been doing the tubes a total of £570 has been raised. This went towards the purchase of the ball machine which is now located in the range building. Tokens for the ball machine can now be purchased from the shop. £2 for 30, £4 for 60 or £5 for 90.

Captains Challenge On Sunday, our challenge came from Darrell Slingsby and Chris Reed. Now Dave and I played quite nicely but found ourselves three down after nine. Darrell had got 20pts and Chris had 21pts in the competition though for the first nine holes. We battled hard on the back-nine but in the end, we lost 4&2 but did manage to half the back-nine. On a more positive note, we did have 7 bits. Yet again though giving 9/10 handicap off yellow tee’s proved our undoing. Very well played to both Darrell and Chris though on playing really well and many thanks for your generous donation to the Captains Charity.

GolfSixes The Juniors took part in their second GolfSixes fixture last week at Hainsworth Park looking for a repeat of their victory at Cottingham. This week’s team of Esme Brauer, Arron Williams, Oliver Myers, Jacob Greenwood, Josh Cook-Walton and Harrison Greenwood performed admirably to combine for 95 points. The stand-out pair being Oliver Myers and Jacob Greenwood with 36 points meant that we finished in fourth place for the event, but we still keep our lead at the top. Our next fixture is here at Hornsea on Saturday, 8 June from 2pm...it would be great to see some members supporting the Juniors.

European Tour Fantasy Race to Dubai
Not really a good week for anyone this week as most of the league members struggled. Many didn’t even manage 100pts. Peter Bridges did the best though topping the weekly league with 829pts. My team also struggled and I did think I would be toppled from the overall lead. This was not the case though and I still just have the overall lead.

Gareth's Report Another month is about to pass with limited rainfall. As I write this report, less than an inch (23.5mm) of rain has fallen in May. Consequently, the irrigation has been working regularly with only one or two troublesome sprinklers giving us a few headaches. This combined with windy conditions and the course is playing firm, dry and in places, the land is showing signs of cracking. All this and we have yet to reach the summer temperatures of June and July. However, growth has been sufficient to keep us busy mowing all areas of the course.
Just to re-cap on our schedule: - Greens cut or Ironed daily.
- Tees cut twice a week.
- Surrounds twice a week.
- Fairways twice a week.
- Semi-rough twice a week.
- Rough three days to complete.
We have verti-cut the greens this month followed by a light dressing of sand (five tons approx.) to help dilute any thatch build up and smooth the surfaces. To induce some growth a granular feed was applied at 25g/m2. Marathon Golf Summer is a slow release granular feed lasting 8 – 12 weeks that gives steady growth without excessive clipping yield. We have also applied two liquid feeds including seaweed, phosphites and iron to maintain a healthy plant. Other tasks completed this month include flymo and edging bunkers and mowing ditch and pond banks. Trees have been strimmed around and several copses have been maintained. The scarring on the first and second greens have been seeded and dressed and showing signs of recovery. The area around the halfway house has been seeded with fescue grasses and wildflowers. It was raked into the profile, rolled and watered. Red shale has been added to the path at the 16th tee, not the ideal grade of aggregate required but for now, it will suffice. Pictures From The Course No pictures sent to me this week but this one was on Twitter last week from Coventry Golf Club and it was amazing how many golf clubs retweeted it. Obviously not just a problem here!

Thinking of Moving? Something a little different but I did tell my nieces' husband Jordan that I would give his new business a little plug if and when I got a chance. Well worth a look at the link if you are thinking of moving.
