I don't know how many of you receive the Hull Daily Mail, but what an embarrassing picture of me that was in the paper last Thursday!! It was nearly 25 years ago!! I'm sure it has given all those that saw it a good laugh though!! It was taken many years ago when Hornsea really did have one of the strongest teams around with myself, Paul Binnington, Alan Wright and Gareth Williams.
I have many happy memories of my golf back then. The trophy is the East Riding team trophy and I think Hornsea won it for 3 years in a row. Anyway enough of the past, let's take a look at what's been going on this week. It's not all my work this week as I have had a few things sent to me.

Hull and District Golfing Association
What a great result for us in the Hull and District at Ganstead which had been re arranged from the previous week. Malcolm Train and Adrian Bird who were 1st out for Hornsea at 8am shot a fantastic score of 64. This score stood all day and in the end won by two clear shots. We had another pair in the prizes too with Tony Close and David Close shooting a 66 which was 3rd. This meant David also won the best Pro's score. In all, a great effort by all the Hornsea Players. Cave Castle could only manage a 68 so we are now just 2 shots behind them in the overall standings.
The next event is at Beverley on 30th October.
Our team is,
S Wright & R Osborne, S Branton & M Cooke, A Bird & S Hine, P Sellers & L Ward, M Train & S Middleton. It is a shot gun start at 9am. If any members ever want to come for a walk round and support us it would be great to see you.

East Riding Golf Alliance
The meeting that was due to be held at Springhead on 22nd October has also been put back until next week. 29th October. Not sure if I will get chance to do a report before the newsletter comes out. It's becoming hard work sorting the back log and getting information to everyone.
Captain's Challenge
We had a great challenge this week against Norman Broxham and Doug Lloyd. Doug was a stand in as Alan Johnson should have been playing but couldn't as he has a bad shoulder. Hope to see you back playing soon though Alan. Conditions where tough with the wind really blowing and I for one was feeling cold for the first time this year stood on the first tee. We managed to win the front 9 one up after a remarkable recovery from the Captain on the 9th hole who played most of the hole from the 13th!! We then had a little more luck on the back 9 and the final score was a 3 and 2 win for myself and the Captain. The win coming on the 16th after I made a great eagle. If you see Norman ask him about it!! Thank you both for a great game and good company.

Greens news - October
October has been a busy month, a period of transition moving from regular mowing to leaf collection. A wet second and third week prompted a few early hoops to appear. It would be appreciated if a little caution was taken as to routes around the course. The hill on the second is a good indicator of how wet the course is with buggies trying to ascend the slope at too severe an angle. Although ropes have yet to appear, please DO NOT drive or park buggies/trolleys right up to the greens. This can cause compaction and unsightly wear patterns. Again pitch marks; if we all repair just one then there won't be a problem.
Mowing of the course is still occurring although growth is slowing. Greens are being cut on alternate days, tees and surrounds once a week and fairways as required. Heights of cut have also changed to accommodate the season.
Aeration of the greens continues. Earlier in the month the greens where solid tined with 8mm tines to a depth of 100mm. Through the winter, weekly slitting will be the norm. This will aid water movement through the soil profile, release carbon dioxide and allow oxygen to the roots. Greens have been fertilised with a high potassium and iron granular feed. It enhances turf health, improves colour and resistance to disease.
Bunkers have been fly-mowed and edged giving them a cleaner, tidier appearance.

Lady Captains Away Weekend
I arranged an overnight stay at Belton Woods near Grantham. It was a very enjoyable weekend which consisted of a Better Ball Competition on the Sunday followed by an AM AM on the Monday.
Unfortunately after a beautiful day on the Sunday the rain came and reduced the AM AM to 9 holes. Our spirits were not dampened unlike our tummies as we had celebrated my birthday the night before over a good dinner and good wine. I think we brightened the evening for many of the guests with our singing. Jan Elder writes a brilliant ditty for us!!
The winners of the Better Ball were:
1st: Caroline Barker & Nicky Salzl 38pts
2nd: Angela Clappison & Di Wills 35pts
3rd: Mags Gee & Julie Wright 34pts
Nearest the Pin was Carol Perry.
The winners of the AM AM were:
1st: Mags Gee - Di Grayson - Caroline Barker
2nd : Angie Hinch - Angela Clappison - Gill Palin
For those observant ones of you, they were 3 balls as some choose not to play in the rain.

Lady Captain 2014
From what I have been told it didn't sound like the weather spoiled the weekend!! (Stret)
It's good to see the sheet for the Captain's finale is full. It's sure to be a good night.
Christmas Dinner
Christmas is coming, why not celebrate at Hornsea Golf Club. Book a private party or book a table at one of our party nights. Click here fore more details.

Well, it's officially here...winter! With the clocks changing on Sunday morning we now find ourselves staring out of the window at 5pm and remembering fondly the lovely warm summer evenings when we could play golf until 10pm. This does not have to be the case though, as winter time is a great test of golf and can help you improve in some tricky areas. Does the high wind's mean you need to hit some shots lower? Do you need to hit some shots further, now that you do not get more run? These are just some of the things that can help you play better golf. If you want to get your game in great shape for the new season then maybe my Winter Deal is what you need! I am offering 3 hours' worth of coaching for just £60 (normal retail prices of £75), which really is a great deal. This offer starts on 1st November and would make either a great Christmas gift for someone or a gift to yourself, I am sure you have worked hard enough this year to treat yourself!
Last week I spoke to you about what sort of food you need to eat whilst you are on the course to help your blood sugar stay constant. Today I am going to talk about what fluids you should drink. Most Pro shops will stock fizzy drinks, sports drinks and water, but which is best for on course? Before we get to that we need to know why we must drink on the course. Over the course of a round of golf, excess heat is produced through swinging the club and walking, and most of the time the only way to get rid of this excess heat is through our skin (sweating). If we do not replace this fluid we can become dehydrated which can cause exhaustion and fatigue - a loss of body water corresponding to 2% body weight can impair performance.
So drinking not only staves off dehydration and fatigue, but it can help you improve your performance.
Fizzy drinks - These are not the best drink for you out on the course. The large amount of sugar in them can increase your blood sugar levels rapidly, but they will drop just as quickly (blood sugar levels need to be kept constant throughout). There is also a very little amount of carbohydrate in them to replace the energy we may have lost.
Water - Very good to keep you hydrated throughout your game and an essential for everyday life. The water will replace the fluid you lose through sweat, without the added sugar of the fizzy drink - every golfer should have a bottle of water in their golf bag!
Sports Drinks - These are designed to help you rehydrate and improve performance thanks to the carbohydrate, sodium and water in them. The carbohydrate and sodium increases the passage of water through the body.
I tend to drink on most holes, as waiting until you are thirsty is too late, this is a sign that you are already dehydrating. When I play golf I take with me a 500ml bottle of water and a 500ml bottle of sports drink and over the course of a round I will drink a small amount of one, then the other. This keeps my blood sugar levels constant and means I can finish a round as strong as I start.
On Saturday I hold a regular junior coaching session and on Monday I hosted a Junior Half Term Summer Camp. The sessions are a fantastic way to get children into playing golf as we focus a small part of the session on technique, but a lot of time putting their skills to the test in some fun games. The kids made up the games, Toilet Challenge(?), Stepping Stones and Motorway. The first was aimed at getting pitch shots to land in specific targets. Stepping Stones involved chipping your ball from one area to the next and Motorway involved playing a bunker shot in between two lines of cones. All the children really enjoyed it and, as a big kid myself, I also had a lot of fun.
These sessions are for anyone to attend as the games and coaching points I give can be adapted for and experienced junior or someone just starting. If you would like more information about these then please do not hesitate to contact me. We are holding another half term camp on Friday 31st and it would be great to see lot's attending.
Have a great golfing week
Paul
Hole in One
As mentioned a few weeks ago we had another winner of a Hugo Boss watch for getting a hole in one. Roger Ward made his on the 7th hole on the 20th September.
Roger tells me it was a fantastic shot but I have heard from his playing partners that it was very lucky!!!
Well done though Roger.
