There have been lots of new products launched so far this year, from stylish shoes and clothing to the latest and greatest drivers and irons.

We’ve been talking about them a lot but we realise not all of it will be relevant or suitable for you. For example, if you’re a scratch golfer then why would you want to know about game-improvement irons, and if you’re a lady why would you want to know about men’s clothing?

Make Sure You Are Loose And Ready To Play

Now, it is great to see you all popping into the shop before you play and having a chat and a coffee but how many of you really prepare yourselves properly for a game of golf.

Many people have talked about the stretches Jimenez does before he plays, so before your next round, why not try these and see if it helps your game. Maybe take it steady the first few times though as I don’t want to see anyone putting their backs out!

And One For Those That Go To The Gym And Want More Distance

So after watching the stretching, how about this for those that go to the gym and would like to hit it a little further.

This is just a few of the exercises that Viktor Hovland, the winner of the Amateur Silver Medal in the U.S. Open last week, does to add more speed to his swing. He is tipped to be a very good golfer so maybe worth giving some of these a go if you are fit and supple enough

Fantasy Golf

A funny old week this week as if anyone was following it on Sunday it was quite a tight finish. Many including myself had Matt Wallace as Captain and some Matt Fitzpatrick.

With double points at stake for the winning player, it was looking like some big changes might take place. Wallace faulted on the last hole dropping back and Fitzpatrick made it into a playoff. Nathan who had Fitzpatrick was thinking he was going to pick up big points but when he lost in a play-off it left Pete Cane topping the weekly leaderboard. I am still hanging onto the top of the overall standings.

Hornsea Ladies Doing Really Well

Hornsea ladies scratch team today achieved a fantastic win over Abbeydale golf club from Sheffield. This team were the only team to have beaten Hornsea however revenge was sweet today with Hornsea coming out 5/2 winners. The result should ensure that our ladies remain in the top flight of Yorkshire ladies golf. Results this year four wins; one draw and 1 loss.
Congratulations ladies.

Representing Hornsea today were:
Sharon Cane, Nicky Salzl, Di Kingswood, Rosie Atkin, Angie Hinch, Lyndis Johns and Wendy Lockwood.

Hornsea Fire Brigade AM AM

Last Friday, Hornsea hosted the annual Hornsea Fire Brigade Am Am and what a lovely day for it it was too. Unfortunately, a few teams didn’t turn up which was a little disappointing but otherwise, the day went well and they raised roughly £1,200 for local charities.

Keeping You Updated!

of greens and setting up of the course all the bunkers were flymo, edged, tidied and hand raked. It was really disappointing to hear that later in the day many bunkers had again been left unraked. The only people playing on Monday were members.

This really is not good enough. Please, can everyone make sure you rake your footprints if you have been in a bunker and leave it how you would like to expect to find it.

On Tuesday, despite the horrible weather, all the greens were verti cut to help remove lateral growth and sprinkler heads were trimmed round.

The rough is non-stop growing at the moment, so it is a daily task to try to keep on top of it. I did have a picture pop up on my phone of how the course looked five years ago when some of the areas out of the main area of play was left uncut.

Hopefully, by the time you receive this newsletter, all the greens will have been given a light top dressing and brushed to help even out the surface.

As already mentioned, footprints in bunkers not getting raked seem to be happening more and more.

This was sent to me on Saturday morning by Wendy Lockwood and shows footprints in the bunker on the 12th hole.

The next is from Leigh Gawley who was this close to a hole-in-one whilst playing for the East Riding Union on Sunday.

He did make his two! He has already had three hole-in-ones before, so it wasn’t too bad getting so close.

Lost your groove?

Much like the tyres on your car, there comes a time when the grooves on your wedges have worn away so much that they need replacing. This process occurs slowly over time and is something that you might not notice at first glance, but when the wear becomes apparent it can have serious consequences on your game.

Fresh vs worn grooves

It might seem a little extreme, but the graphic above illustrates the impact worn grooves can have on shots into greens - a lower ball flight that rolls out farther compared to a wedge with fresh grooves.

Yes, you might be able to adapt by pitching the ball shorter and letting it roll out, but when you don't have much green to work with or are playing a delicate shot worn grooves will be of no use.

What do we suggest?

If dirt, grit and water have visibly harmed your wedge face, it’s time to get your groove back with a new wedge set-up.
