Stretton's News It is me back this week after Nathan did a great job with last week’s newsletter I feel a little under pressure! Yvonne and Tash both enjoyed Liverpool last week but it was a slightly different story for me as I ended up with a trapped nerve in my shoulder on the first night, which trust me, was and still is very painful despite taking all sorts of tablets which is something I never like to do. As I was writing this, I have slightly improved but I have a long way to go. If any of you are ever across in Liverpool, I can highly recommend an Indian restaurant called Mowgli. Really nice traditional Indian food. In last week’s newsletter, there was a picture and a question as to which hole it was. I am very impressed so many of you know the course so well with over 100 people replying. After doing a draw, the winner of the sleeve of Pro V’s is Len Ellenton who got it right as it was the 14th green looking towards the 5th.

Big Thanks to Hornsea Fire Brigade At roughly 1.45pm on Bank Holiday Monday, a huge plume of black smoke could be seen for miles around. What was it? Where is the fire? Could it even be coming from the greens sheds? I jumped on a buggy and headed out to see. As I got nearer, it was obvious it wasn’t the greens sheds but the field just to the side of the 17th green was well alight. The Hornsea Fire Brigade were already in attendance and trying to get things under control. I did think there was a good chance that we could lose all the trees down the side of the 17th and the practice ground when I first saw it. The Fire Brigade did a great job though and quickly had it all under control. The cause was actually a combine which had caught fire, the driver did get out safely. What a mess it is too. Here are a couple of videos and pictures for you. A big thanks must go to all the retained firefighters from Hornsea for doing such a great job.

Knockout Finals Day The matches to be played on Finals Day on Sunday, 15 September is below with start times. It would be great to see members out supporting or caddying if you have friends in the finals. We shall be doing a quick presentation to all the winners on the completion of the last match. |
Scratch League On Tuesday afternoon, both the Gents Scratch League teams travelled up to Ganton Golf Club to play in the finals playoff. I have pinched this from Facebook which Nathan wrote on what was another great evening for #teamhornsea. Well done tonight to Jack Maxey, Nick Raybould, Luke Robinson, Tommy Broadley, Andy Fox and Sam Middleton. We may only have come first and second in the leagues but we came first and first when it mattered. Really well-done lads on completing a great season. Big thanks to Leigh Gawley and Joe Palmer for keeping us updated on Twitter. To everyone that has played this year a massive thanks and well done as well. Sam has done a great job this year sorting everything out from this to the Yorkshire Team Champs. Just the National one to go to make this a truly brilliant year! Up the Hornsea massive. |
Winter Alliances
The sheets are up in the Gents locker room for this seasons Winter Alliances and I could do with more people putting their names down or we shall be struggling to field a team. These are always great day’s and keeps your game in order throughout the winter.

Jack On Form Again In Yorkshire Amateur
Jack Maxey came fifth last week in the Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs Amateur Championship held at Pannal GC. Jack put in four good rounds of 71, 76, 70 and 71 for the three-day event. The first two days were very windy and proved very testing for many players, the last day the players had to play 36 holes, the weather was calmer but still a strong breeze with heavy rain showers in the afternoon. Jack can be seen collecting his voucher from the President of the YUGC Mr Kevin Tucker. Well done again Jack.

Fantasy Golf
It was a poor week for me again but somehow I am still just leading the overall standings from Pete Cane and Darrell Slingsby but there really isn’t much in it at all. It was Alan Beaumont this week though that led the way with Rees Brown just 100 points behind.

How Did I Do PING Pairs Final
Over the last two days, Hornsea members Ashley Dexter and Lee Guest have been down at Gainsborough as they won through to the finals of the How Did I Do PING Pairs Final. What a few day’s they have had too. On Tuesday, they received a fantastic welcome pack of all sorts of PING goodies, had a tour of the PING factory, had a PING fitting, a practice round, food and then stayed overnight. The main competition was on Wednesday with them playing in a full handicap better ball. With just eight pairs qualifying from over 12,000 entries they had already done well.
|
To coincide with the above, we're delighted to announce that the Hornsea pair of Ashley Dexter and Lee Guest have been victorious and are the 2019 PING Pairs Champions. They shot a fantastic score of 39 points and have both gone home with a custom fit PING driver and putter. Absolutely fantastic guys, we at Hornsea are all over the moon for you.

Pictures From The Course
I’ve had a few this week but this one I did like of Brian Clark playing I guess his second shot on the 15th. Now they were playing off the yellow tee’s which you can clearly see. So just how did his ball end up here! Thanks go to Darrell Slingsby for the photo.

Rakes in bunkers was brought up at the AGM last Thursday. Now if all golfers put the rakes back into the bunkers like this picture as Gareth would like you all too there would never be a problem. That is making sure the rake is put well into the bunker, not half in half out, with the shaft of the rake pointing towards the green. Also, if you walk past a bunker and you notice the rake in the wrong position just quickly adjust it, please.

Green's News – August 2019 As we leave the summer months and head towards early autumn the course remains quite dry. Leaf fall has begun probably due to the dry conditions and at times high winds. Mowing is still the priority which has kept us busy especially with being down to four staff (holidays) for most of the month. Perhaps one of the most important week of the year for the course is maintenance week. This is essential work carried out on the greens to improve surface drainage, dilute and remove thatch and allow oxygen into the root zone. The week prior a fungicide was sprayed preventatively to protect the plant from disease pressure created at this time of year. Maintenance week itself began on Sunday 11th with solid tining using 12mm tines to a depth 175mm. This was completed on Monday morning and was immediately followed by top dressing and brushing. The rain stopped further work that day but we were able to calibrate the Graden CSI for the next planned task. The Graden is a pedestrian deep scarifier/seeder which cuts a row of 17 grooves and is backfilled with dried sand and drops seed into the base of the groove simultaneously. We utilized our remaining stock of dried sand but purchased 40kg’s of Bent seed from Hurrell's of Cranswick. This linear aeration covers over 10% of the greens surface area. The Graden was set to a depth of 9mm to create the seedbed in which the new Bent seed will germinate, it is also imperative that seed has contact with soil. The excess thatch material was collected and the greens have blown clean. The final process included mowing the greens, a granular feed and a dusting of sand to smooth the surface. A busy week……..! Fortunately, we had torrential rain at the end of the week to help wash in the dressing and stimulate growth and recovery. However little rain has fallen since but the irrigation has been in action to aid the establishment of the seedling. Rainfall 33mm Gareth Williams, Course Director Please repair your pitch marks...thank you!
