Before the season starts I am considering getting an expert in to talk and teach any that are interested in wanting to understand the art of green-reading. Many of you that watch golf will have noticed Justin Rose and others now using the Aim Point technique. Numbers would be limited but if it is something that would interest you please let me know.

So far I have just 3 people that are interested and so need some more. Seriously, if you want to understand green reading and want to improve your putting this would be money well spent. I have attached a quick video for those that want to know a little more.

Warm-Up Before You Play

This week, I have some exercises for you to try next time you come to play. You might need to give yourselves a little longer but just goes to show what the top players do before stepping out onto the course.

Group Coaching Sessions are Back!

This is a great way to learn and improve your golf in a relaxed atmosphere. All parts of this great game will be looked at starting on the 3rd February. At only £5 per session, it is great value too.

Member Booking Online

As from the 29th January those of you that book online for your tee times, which I know now is most of you, will see a few changes. Below is the only information we have been sent so far but it does look like it should be improved and easier to use booking website.

For those that don’t use the system you really should so you can see what is going on each day.

We are happy to announce that after a successful beta test our brand new member booking website is ready to roll out to your club.

The new site was tested by 30 clubs in the UK and Ireland over the last few months and we have made improvements and changes along the way. The result is not only a smart-looking design but an enhanced, fully-responsive user experience that works on mobile, tablet and desktop devices.

Your club has been scheduled to be upgraded on 29 January. We hope you and your members love the new site!

New features include:

Responsive design.
We have found that 70% of members visit our site on either mobile or tablet, making a user-friendly experience for all devices a must for the new member's site.

Club Messages.
Stay in touch with your members anytime, anywhere with our club messages tool. These appear as notifications when members login to the booking site or as push notifications for users of the free BRS GOLF app.

Open Events at Hornsea

Through the year we have many different “Open Events” at Hornsea which are always very popular.
These are open to members and non-members. You can either book in the shop but probably the easiest way now is to book online.

Pro & Captains Challenge Matches

For any of you that fancy challenging the Gents Captain Ross and myself to a game in the Captains Challenge the sheet is now up in the Rolston Bar. The dates and times are shown so please make a note of what you book. All of the times are for Sunday’s but some of the times vary. All money raised from these matches will go towards the Captains charity.

Club Knockouts

Hard to believe I know but the entries are available from Friday 31st January for the Club Knockouts.

This is always a great way to meet other members and you never know you might get your name up in gold at the Club forever. For those that have made it through to the finals and have been able to play in “Finals Day”, this is also a great event.

I have attached the rules and an entry form if you would like to fill it in at home. Please place all entries in an envelope with the correct money and either drop it off in the shop or put it in the competition box in the clubhouse.

Another Hole in One

Many congratulations to Pam Mounfield who had a hole in one on the 17th at Hornsea last Friday. This is her second in less than a year! It was a perfect shot with a 7 wood according to her golfing colleagues.

Greens news

Look after your course

What is going on? We have had a few dry days! A bit of frost too which is also good to help to dry things up a little. Can I just ask when we do have a frost to please take care and make sure you know all frost and ice off your shoes before walking onto the greens. It is also really clear when we have a frost that we have members who are clearly not going around the ropes.

These pictures were taken early on Sunday morning of both sides of the 3rd green and when they were taken there was only one group out that had taken trollies. Please walk round the ropes if you must take a trolley. They are there to help protect the course. Many courses at the moment have full trolley bans. This isn’t something we want to do here so if you do see anyone with a trolley in the wrong place please tell them. It is your course that most are trying to protect.

As well as the usual jobs at this time of year on Monday the greens were solid tined and then rolled. This will help to dry out the surfaces and get some much-needed air to the roots.

Those that have played off the white tees might have noticed the pavers on the 16th back tee had dropped. These have now been lifted as shown in the picture which was taken on a very cold Tuesday morning.

Can all golfers please remember to repair all pitch marks as they really are worse than ever despite everyone saying they always repair them. Playing at just after 11 on Sunday it wasn’t difficult to repair at least 10 per green I was told.

Layer up

Last week we talked about one of our favourite topics: rain! Whilst waterproof protection is key for staying dry when caught in a downpour, combining layers of clothing underneath is vital if you want to enjoy the warmth without being so restricted that you can’t complete your backswing.

What do we mean by layering?

Lots of golfers are still in the habit of putting on as many layers as they possibly can in the winter to combat the cold – a vest, turtleneck, polo, sweater and jacket – but today’s golf clothing could easily cut that down by half.

What do we suggest?
