A great evening was had by all that attended the Burns Night last Saturday. Everyone looked smart all dressed in black tie. For the second year in a row it was quite entertaining watching Paul Lockwood addressing the haggis!! This was followed by a traditional Scottish meal of Scotch broth, haggis and neeps, shortbread and strawberries oh and the odd shot of whisky!! Zak Stevens then entertained us all with 45 minutes of great jokes and stories. I'm sure a few would have been suffering with hangovers on Sunday though!! I know I was very pleased not to be golfing early on Sunday.
It's good to see that a few of you have joined the Fantasy Race to Dubai. It makes following the golf a little more interesting. I spent quite a while last week picking who I thought would perform well in the Qatar Masters. 9 of my 10 made the cut but I didn't have anyone in the top 10. After 2 weeks Jon Mitchell looks like he knows what he is doing as he has a large lead already. Early days yet though Jon!! If you haven't joined take a look at the European Tour website and look at Fantasy Race to Dubai. To join the Hornsea Golf Club league you need the pin number 9252. Click here to see the current standings.
Good to see a few of you must read this newsletter as I've had quite a few re grips to do after last week's bit on re gripping clubs. Really does amaze me how bad some of the grips have been. Totally perished and shiny, almost glass like. It really does make a difference if you can hold onto your club easily.

Hull & District Golfing Alliance
Sam Middleton and Lindsay Ward had a great score at Withernsea last Thursday. They shot a 7 under 65. It wasn't quite good enough to win as a 64 came in from Hessle late on. It did help with the overall scores though and Hornsea are now 3 clear in the Victor Hurdle Cup. www.hullanddistrictgolf.co.uk The next event will be played at Hainsworth Park on Thursday 5th February. The team is,
8.15 P Sellers & M Train, S Middleton & C Wilson.
9.22 D Close & T Close, S Wright & M Cadmore.
11.45 P Lockwood & A Bird, S Branton & M Cooke.
12.45 A Rosindale & M Russell, L Nicholson & A Dickinson.
East Riding Golf Alliance
Wednesday 28th January saw the East Riding Alliance return from the winter break. The conditions where not great with strong winds and showers of rain and sleet which made the par 72 course play very hard. Hornsea's two pairs did ok though. A one over par 73 from Sam Middleton and Mark Cooke was not bad. Steve Uzzell and Andy Fox managed a three under 69 though which saw them finish tied 3rd. Hornsea lost a little ground in the overall standings and are now 5th. The best score of the day came from Hessle pairing Paul Lockwood and Andy Greetham. They managed a great score of 65 which ended up 3 clear.
Work is still continuing on the bunkers on 7th and 8th. We could really do with a spell of dry frost free weather to help but this doesn't look like it is going to be the case with snow forecast. The bunkers round 7 are starting to take shape though.
The 8th path should be finished by the time this newsletter reaches you all. It will just need some red stone on it to finish it off.
Work has also started on the 10th path to re edge that the same as the 8th. Whilst this is been done the old drinks fountain will be removed. I did mention in last week's newsletter that the greens staff has a new member on the team. He is called Paul Lazenby (pictured above.) He is a keen golfer and plays off 15 handicap.
Good to see quite a few of you are taking advantage of the early breakfasts that are now available before you play. The kitchen is now open from 8.30 every day for you to fuel up ready for your round.
Paul Gibson - PGA Teaching Professional
Last week I gave you some simple hints and tips on how to prepare when facing a putt. This week I am going to look at the stance and set up to the putting stroke to give you a comfortable and effective position from which you can hole more putts.
