Greetings from Stretton Wright
Hornsea Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

It's been a really busy couple of weeks what with lots of visiting parties, the Second and Third Division Open, the Hornsea Gutty and the two Over 50's. I have spent a lot of time giving out cards, checking cards and talking to everyone.

It is really nice to hear so many positive comments about everything we do at Hornsea. I know it is not possible to keep everyone happy but the feedback from 95% is that all we do at Hornsea is very good. We even had a party that came to us on Saturday afternoon that had played at Ganton on Friday and said they enjoyed it here far more.

Now I heard a little rumour whilst I was in the shop on Saturday afternoon that one of our members had taken quite a few shots on the 16th in the medal. I could not resist and had a quick look on the computer to see for myself. Sure enough one of the highest scores I have ever seen was recorded.

A 17!! I was also pleased to see that he kept going though and didn't No Return which I'm sure everyone else would have done. Maybe a lesson or two will see you back on form Jiggy!!!

This was the first of the Gold Medal Competitions were everyone playing up to 1:30 entered the competitions. Can I thank nearly all of you who entered without a problem? We had a couple of grumbles but by far and away the majority think it's a good idea to have everyone playing entering the competition. 4. 58.6 Ian Lockwood 8, Geoff Hunter 13, Tom Walker 15, Ross Meggison 18. £5each

This was a great night and all that played really enjoyed it. It was a fantastic evening and the course was superb. Just a shame only 13 teams played although I know there was a lot of golf on at other courses. For those that think a Texas Scramble only suits the lower handicaps please take note of the handicaps of the winning team.

The next Monday night event is a 13 hole shotgun start on Monday, 1 June where we would like to see a golfer inviting a non-golfer. This is to be a fun event with the idea of bringing your partner or a friend to come up to the golf club, have a go at hitting some shots and see what we have to offer here. I'm sure some of your partners will have never set foot on the golf course before. It will be a 5pm start again and the entry sheet is up now. Question is dare I take Yvonne out?

Hornsea Gutty

Friday, 8 May saw Hornsea Golf Club hold their Yorkshire Order of Merit event, The Hornsea Gutty. Fine weather greeted 50 of the finest golfers from Yorkshire. Conditions changed a little though as the day progressed with rain affecting the later starters. Everyone enjoyed the condition of Hornsea which many believe for the time of year is as good as anywhere. Leading after the first round was Hornsea's very own Rees Brown who shot a very impressive 71. By the time all the cards from the first round where returned this saw Rees hold a two shot lead from Andy Lockwood from Hessle. It was good to see everyone return a score in the morning too. In the afternoon with the weather getting worse I was expecting scores to rise. This was not the case for some though. A 66 from Ryan Gray which equalled the course record put him right in contention even after taking 81 in the first round. Andy Lockwood added another solid round of 75 to his opening 73 and Martyn Hinchcliffe from Moortown playing Hornsea for the first time shot a 72 after his opening 77. Rees struggled a little in the afternoon after making a double bogey up the first and came in with a 78. The winner though was Ben Rozenbroek who shot 77 in the morning and followed that in the afternoon with a great score of 68 to win the event by two clear shots. Well played Ben. The CSS for both rounds was 74.

Please find attached all the final positions. Prizes were awarded to the top 5 placed, best am and pm and best 36 hole nett score.

Over 50s Am-Am Wednesday, 13 May

Wednesday 13th May saw Hornsea Golf Club hold it's second Over 50's Am-Am of 2015. A field of 31 teams played on a really nice day, but what felt like a light breeze was to catch quite a few teams out as they played the back nine. As I checked all the cards many teams where doing well halfway round but only a few kept it going. I'm sure lots of teams will be thinking if only they had scored a few more on the last nine. 83 was the best score of the day which was a team from two clubs, Normanton and Garforth. 80 points came in 2nd and the remaining four places went to teams scoring six under with 79. The time sheet for next year's event is now open and many have booked already as yet again everyone enjoyed the course and facilities. Please email us or give us a call to reserve your place in next year's event. Please find attached the final score sheet. All prize winners have been put into credit at the shop at Hornsea.

  • Sunday, 17 May 2015 - Bob Gibbins Trophy (juniors)
  • Tuesday, 19 May 2015 - Ladies 36 Hole Broderick Cup
  • Thursday, 21 May 2015 - Mid Week Stableford

On Sunday morning myself and the Club Captain Alan Barker took on last year's Captain Keith Marshall and this year's Vice-Captain Mally Parker. What a great game we had too. After nine holes we were all square after only a couple of holes had changed hands. On the back nine a par four was good enough to win the 11th and the 13th for us to see us move two up. It stayed like that until another win with a four nett three on the 15th took us to three up with three to play and a par on the 16th kept up our unbeaten record. It was a great game though with lots of banter and general good humour; just how I like to play golf. By far and away the best comment was when Alan hit his tee shot a little off line on the ninth and with his ball heading for trouble shouted 'Come Back, Come Back'. This was followed by a very quick reply from Mally with 'More Chance of Elvis Coming Back!!!!' Thanks guys for a great morning. There are still some dates left towards the end of the year if any of you fancy challenging us.

Tuesday Club

Well I guess the weather kept a few away this week as only 24 played. Leading the way this week with a great score of 38 points was Pat Slaven who managed one shot better than Alan Smith on 37. 3 others managed 36. Winning nearest the pin on 18 was Darren Reeve
.

With it been such a busy week at the club with various events on most of the week has involved cutting and preparing the course. Some of the copses have been cut and trees strimmed around. Pond banks have been cut and most of the ditch banks. A second cut of all fairways, tees, surrounds and semi rough should completed tomorrow. The greens are now cut every day. After last weekend's rain and slightly warmer temperatures this week I'm sure you will all agree the course is looking good.

Maybe Just Stick to Golf

On Saturday morning David Prescott one of our members had to play early as he had been called up to make yet another comeback in his cricket career for Hornsea Town. Now over the years David has been a top sports man who has excelled in all sports. I do wonder though after getting a top edge on Saturday causing the cricket ball to hit him in the eye if he might just stick to golf from now on!!!! He did continue batting and helped Hornsea to a win!!!!
