Greetings from Stretton Wright
Hornsea Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Now a lot of you might not know but I am currently trying to get myself much fitter and am also working on my game quite a lot at the moment practicing most evenings. Quite a few of you might have never seen me swing so here is a quick clip for you. Like all golfers I am always trying to find the magic move and am currently just trying to get a little more shoulder turn in my backswing. See what you think.

It was a busy weekend for me sat on the desk on Saturday and Sunday sorting cards etc. for the Hornsea 1st Division Open and the Hornsea Mixed Open. It really is a pleasure to listen to so many great comments about our course. David Norton who is the Head Greenkeeper at Forest Pines and also looks after 11 other Q Hotel Golf Courses was very complimentary about everything. We also received this email from a party that played earlier in the week.

"Dear sirs, I visited your club yesterday as part of a small society under the name of S.Stanway. I just wanted to comment on the welcome we all received. The professional was welcoming and helpful and another member of staff kindly took a group photo of us on the 1st tee. The steward was courteous and friendly and we all enjoyed our meal after the game. The course was in superb condition and the members we encountered were polite and a credit to the club. It was all just so very refreshing to have such a welcoming experience and we all look forward to hopefully seeing you all again next year."

Kind regards, Gareth Evans

As members we should recognise the fact that Hornsea really is one of the best around and spread the word.

Saturday evening was spent celebrating Paul Lockwood's 60th birthday at the Golf Club. What a fantastic night it was too. Even I was up dancing for a short time!! I was suffering a little whilst sitting at the desk on Sunday though!!

As members, do you know you can have your special events at the club without a room hire charge. There is a room hire charge for non-members. It really is a great venue for birthdays, weddings or parties.

Many congratulations go to David Turner as he becomes another member to record a hole in one. It was the 7th hole again with a perfectly struck shot that never left the flag. He achieved this on Sunday whilst playing in the Hornsea Mixed Open. Well done David on what I believe is your 4th hole in one.

Can all members that are in the knockouts please make sure you get your games played in time. I had to disqualify 3 lots this week for not playing in time.

PAST CAPTAINS AM AM

Last Wednesday saw Hornsea Golf Club host the annual Past Captains Am Am. This really is one of the best events of the year and Frank Palin who organises it really deserves a great deal of thanks for all the work he puts in to making it such a success. The event raises money for the club which is always spent on improvements to our course and facilities. This year just under £900 was raised. Every Past Captain is invited to put a team in with most inviting Past Captains from local clubs from their year. This year 18 teams played. It was a really nice afternoon weather wise and everyone that played enjoyed the course. The golf was followed by a fantastic carvery in the clubhouse a raffle and then the presentation.

Prize winners were:

Ladies

1st Margaret Gee, Sharon Cane, Sylvia Charter, Pam Mounfield 140
2nd Wendy Lockwood, Caroline Barker, Sue Gardner, Ann Robinson 143

Gents

HORNSEA FIRE BRIGADE CHARITY AM AM

Friday 5th June saw Hornsea host the local Fire Brigade Am Am. Mick Bateman and Andrew Gilmour along with the help of others really did a great job in getting 29 teams to play this year. Mick had also managed to get every tee sponsored and was out before the event putting all these out. A special mention to Morrison's Utility Services who made a very generous donation and also put two teams in, Everquip who paid for the coffee and bacon sandwiches before play and everyone else who helped to contribute to make the day such a great success.

The prize winners were:
1st T Close, D Close, R Close, K Middleton 90pts
2nd I Lockwood, J Jeffries, S Smith, M Rowbotham 89pts
3rd P Sutton, A Bird, J Clubley, B Coggrave 83pts
4th I Sims, I Prout, C Smith, P Coates 83pts

Now I played in this event and one of my playing partners had a bit of an off day where he spent most of his time playing from the wrong hole. This picture shows him playing his second shot to the 11th from near the ditch on the 10th!! Now I have never seen anyone there before. You need some serious practice Ashley Fitchett!!

If you are out playing and find yourself or partner in a strange position please send me a picture. I would love to see them. It might even appear on the newsletter!!

CAPTAINS CHALLENGE

No challenge this week as Alan was away working and I was busy on the desk giving out and checking cards.

GREENS

Busy week again cutting and preparing with so many events this last week. The 8th and 10th paths have also been finished off. Whilst working near the 11th on Tuesday morning Gareth spotted a small grass snake. If you look carefully he took a picture of it.

Wines of the World

For those of you that just like a tipple or are indeed connoisseurs of the fermented juice of the grape, We have just the event for you! On Weds 22nd July, self-confessed, amateur 'sommelier' Mike Brooke will share his wealth of knowledge by leading an informative evening of wine-tasting featuring bottles of best loved vin, vino and vinho from around the globe. From the classics of the Mediterranean, to the vinyards of the New World, we will be finding out what suits your palate, and why!

There will also be a draw on the evening to win a case of wine. Monies raised will go to the Captains' Fund. The evening begins at 7:30 in the Lounge Bar and is restricted to just 40 persons on a first-come basis. The cost is £7.50 per person to include all tasting wines, and cheese and biscuits as an accompaniment. In order to fully enjoy the event, and if there is enough call, we will organise a minibus to take people home to Hornsea and the surrounding villages at an additional cost of £5 per person. Please sign up on the sheet in the Lounge Bar, as soon as possible to ensure your place at this great event!

Did You Know?

An interesting conversation was overheard in the clubhouse recently regarding hazards marked by stakes; and where to drop if unplayable in the hazard. It might be worth a reminder for all players new and old, to help decipher the difference.

Yellow stakes
, and sometimes yellow lines, indicate a water hazard. Some of the time these 'water hazards' may be dry, such as in a ditch crossing the course, but they are still designated as a hazard. If the golfer decides that the ball is playable, then a shot can be attempted, but the club cannot be grounded (as in a bunker) at penalty of one shot. If the ball is under water (and has been seen, and agreed with virtual certainty, to have entered the hazard) or is otherwise unplayable, it is almost always best to take a penalty and put another ball (or the retrieved ball) into play at the addition of one penalty shot. There are two options for putting this 'new' ball into play: a) to return to the spot from which the previous shot was played, drop and play again, or b) drop the ball (with an out-stretched arm from shoulder height) back from the point at which the ball crossed the line of hazard (where there are no lines, take a point directly between the stakes and / or water). The drop can be made as far back as the player wishes, as long as the point where the ball last crossed into the hazard is kept between the point of the drop and the hole/pin. Remember, the stakes and lines are themselves part of the hazard.

Red Stakes
, and sometimes red lines, indicate a 'lateral' water hazard, meaning that it usually runs alongside or adjacent to the direction of play, rather than across it; it can also be where there would be no reasonable dropping area keeping the projected line to the pin from the point of entry into hazard (such as at the back portion of the pond on the 11th). Dropping from these hazards is handled differently. Players can still decide to play from the hazard if they so desire, remembering the grounding issue as above. However, in the vast majority of cases, the golfer will usually take a one shot penalty and take a drop. Although the player may still use the dropping guidance as for the yellow stakes, this is often impractical or even impossible. Most usually, the golfer will mark the point at which the ball last crossed the margin, and drop the ball within two club lengths of that point ensuring that the ball once at rest is no nearer the hole. If that cannot be achieved, then the golfer should find the nearest point on the margin of the hazard to where the ball last crossed, where a drop can be made equidistant, but no nearer to the hole. Yellow and red stakes can be moved (moveable obstructions) to allow a shot to be played, but white stakes cannot!
