Greetings from Stretton Wright
Hornsea Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Good afternoon. I hope you have all had a good week. The US Open starts today and from what I've seen so far, it looks like it could be a tough week for them all. Justin Rose is the man for me this week. He is my star man in the fantasy league!! I wonder how Tiger will get on too. Will he even make the cut??

Don't forget the sheets are up outside the shop for a number of upcoming events. Invitation Day, Captains Weekend, Texas Scramble and the 36 hole Club Championship. If you can't get down to the club give us a call and we can put your names up for you. There are still plenty of times available for them all and it would be nice to see a few more members supporting these events.

It's not often that Yvonne and I get chance to get away these days but last week we managed a few days away up near Whitby. We stayed in a fantastic place that I would highly recommend if you are looking for somewhere to celebrate a special occasion. The place is called Raithwaite Hall. Great accommodation, amazing surroundings and the food was fantastic. www.raithwaiteestate.com If you have afternoon tea though only order it for one. It took Yvonne and I nearly 2 hours to finish it and didn't do my diet any good at all. Very nice though!!

Last Friday and Saturday, Hornsea Football Club held a reunion at the Golf Club. Friday they played golf and they had a bit of a party on Saturday evening. One of the players, Barry Thompson, had found what I can only describe as a bright pair of trousers to wear!! Another photo that was been passed around was this one. Do any of you recognise anyone on here? There is at least one past member who my dad played a lot of golf with and also a couple that play at Hornsea and Hainsworth now. Can you name them?

On Wednesday July 1st Hornsea is holding an Open Am Am. We still have some times available and the event is open to members and non-members. Please ring the shop for more details or to book a time. 01964 534989. Click here to see flyer.

Saturday 13th June 2015 - Ladies Medal

1st Nicola Salzl 95-17-78
2nd Wendy Lockwood 98-14-84
3rd Angie Hinch 104-15-89

Can I just congratulate our Ladies Scratch Team for a great result last week against a very strong team from Ilkley. In a very close match with quite a few games going to the last few holes our girls managed a half, 3½ games each.

Tuesday 16th June 2015 - Ladies PING Betterball

1st A. Hinch & S. Cane 41pts
2nd L. Wrigglesworth & M. Moore 35pts
3rd L. Johns & W. Lockwood 35pts

I like the look of one of the gents semi-final games in the knockouts. We have a father and son challenging each other and the banter has started already on the draw sheet!!

CAPTAINS CHALLENGE

Our challengers this week were Colin Evans and Keith Parry. Alan was away in France so I got our Vice Captain Malcom Parker to stand in. What a good move that proved to be as Mally had a great game in what were testing conditions on Sunday morning. Colin and Keith both played the front 9 really well and ended up taking it by one hole despite myself and Mally been well under par. The back 9 was into the wind and was playing really hard. Colin's putter wasn't quite as hot as usual and a couple of 3 putts really let us back into the game. Mally made a great 5 nett 4 down the 16th to eventually give us a win 3&2. Can I thank both Colin and Keith for a great morning and also for the very generous donation they made to the Captains charity.

TUESDAY CLUB

With been away last week I didn't get the result from last week so here are the last two weeks results.

1st Ben Wait 39pts
2nd Alan Smith 37pts
Nearest 18th Charlie Betts

16th June

1st Neil Jordan 41pts
2nd Chris Reed 40pts
Nearest 18th Len Ellenton

I'm looking forward to seeing a sheet with the overall scores as I think it could be close at the top.

GREENS

Grass is growing like mad so it is all hands on cutting equipment pretty much all the time. Bunkers have again been edged and tidied this week. You might have notice the leak that has happened on the winter tee on the 7th. It is a little unsightly at the moment but this area will recover. It was caused by a hydraulic pipe bursting on the tees machine. For those of you that don't think the sprinklers are working trust me they are. Nathan went out to play a few holes on Tuesday evening and whilst putting out on the 1st on the sprinklers came and absolutely soaked him as he couldn't get out of the way of them!! He was not a happy young man. I found it quite amusing though. Just wish I had been there to take a picture!!!!

Playing a provisional

If, after playing a shot, you think your ball might be lost outside of a hazard, or possibly out of bounds, you should play a 'provisional ball'. You must clearly state that it is a provisional ball before hitting it, and declare how it differs from the original - eg different make, number or markings. It must be played before you move forward. ie once you have left the tee or location of subsequent shot, you cannot go back and call the next ball a provisional! Should you go back to hit another after moving forward, you are in fact calling the first ball lost and out of play.

Having declared and hit a provisional ball, you have the usual 5 minutes to find the original once the search starts. If the original ball is found, play must continue with it. There is no choice- even if it's in a very bad lie! If it is not found, then it is declared lost and the provisional becomes the ball in play. The penalty at that point is stroke and distance, and so if it was the second ball from the tee it is there for 3, (added penalty plus the stroke itself).

It's amazing how many times a provisional goes much straighter than the first shot! Why is that? It might be frustrating to have to play another ball, but it beats going all the way back to the tee! Remember, if a group is waiting while you look for a ball, you should offer to let them through. They may decline, but you should always offer!!
