Can you believe its July and at last we are having a bit of summer. It is great to see so many people playing. It is amazing what a bit of sun and warmth does. Let's hope it lasts!!
I haven't much to say in this weeks newsletter as I'm still in awe of what three of our members achieved last Friday so this week's newsletter is mainly all about them. See below.
HORNSEA 100
Well they did it and did it easily. A massive congratulation to Leigh Gawley, Joe Palmer and Chris Wilson for completing their 100 hole challenge last Friday. It was an early start for them as they teed off at 4am and I was there with Dave Goundry to see them off. They were soon into their stride and ended up completing the 100 holes just after 7pm. It was great to see so many people coming out to support them and a special thanks to all the caddies and helpers on the day. Well done boys. I wonder how you can top this?? If you would like to make a donation you still can by going to the link below. All the money raised is not shown on there as they have had other donations and also ran a raffle.

This is a full report of the day from Joe Palmer:
The Hornsea100 would like to thank everyone who contributed & donated towards our special day last Friday. It was a day that will live long in our memories. We still need to do the final tot up, but we believe we have raised somewhere in the region of £2,700 which our charities Dove House Hospice and Barnardo's will be only too delighted with.
Our extended gratitude goes to Stretton & Yvonne Wright for ensuring everyone was aware of our time precious plight and for the use of a buggy ferrying out people & refreshments throughout the day. We endured no hold ups whatsoever and ended up finishing on the 100th hole nearly 2 hours ahead of schedule!
Also a big thanks to Gareth Williams and his team of green-keepers for setting up the course in truly fantastic condition. And to Paul & the bar-staff for keeping all our supporters refreshed on what was a quite balmy evening.
And finally to all the caddies who helped shoulder the load (massive apologies if we've missed any of you, there were so many to remember!) Dave Goundry, Howard Palmer, Steve Robinson, Paul Lockwood, Nathan Wright, Tony Hood, Andrew Gilmour, Paul Gibson, Carl Horth, Tom Gelsthorpe, "Jiggy" Giles and Dave Prescott.
Now for the day itself, which commenced on the 5th Tee. At 4.01am the first ball was struck in anger into the gloom! We were joined for the first 10 holes by original team member Dave Goundry who unfortunately had to pull out of the event due to injury. For those interested, these 10 holes took just 70 minutes to complete. Joe got the balls rolling with the first birdie of the day on the 14th of all holes! After a quick dash back to the first tee in our cars to commence the remaining 5 full rounds Chris Wilson, aside from playing golf, took on the role of organising a meeting place for Dave Prescott. Dave duly obliged at about 7am bringing half a dozen bacon sandwiches to the 15th tee, despite parking at the Tower! Thanks Dave!
Despite not marking a ball, lining a putt up and carrying just half a set of clubs Leigh Gawley posted a very impressive level par 72 gross in about 2 hours 20 minutes! Tour Professionals who need 5 hours - please take note!! The less could be said about Joe's and Chris' 1st full rounds, but there were some good shots in there to keep Leigh company.
A little before 8am it was time to do it all again, back round to the 1st tee where Howard Palmer joined the group caddying and removing the flag-sticks, which was an added bonus. Now I'm sure everyone at the club is more than aware by now, but those who have been living under a rock, the 37th hole sprung up one of those "moments" that will forever live in Joe's memory. Playing what is more commonly known as the 9th, Joe holed out an Eagle 2 from fully 160 yards which resulted in a lot high fives, fist pumps and whooping - the joy was short lived however when the same ball found the gorse on the left of the 10th never to be seen again!
A combination of caddies joined the group for the 3rd and 4th full rounds, Leigh was being his robotic best, churning out two more sub 80 rounds and Chris albeit struggling to buy a birdie was a man on a mission to complete this challenge months ahead of his 50th birthday and was really setting the pace of the 3 ball.
After 82 holes the team were licking their wounds, badly blistered toes the main ailment! However the support we received on those final 18 holes drove us on. Chris' parents, Leigh's wife and Joe's family joined the group. Malcolm Train and Paul Duckworth brought much needed alcoholic refreshment for the final kick for home at the Tower.
Once again Leigh Gawley was enjoying another high quality round which most of us can only dream about, let alone being off the back of 13 hours already played and some 25 miles walked. As we drove off the 97thtee an army of spectators grew and grew. This spurred Joe & Chris on to play some of their best golf with the former lipping out from 10 foot for an Eagle 3 on the 16th. Further alcoholic beverages this time were kindly provided by Rees Brown to help steady the nerves for the final 2 holes.
At 7.10pm some 15 hours after they set off, it was only apt for Leigh to roll in a 25 foot putt birdie in front of a raucous set of followers on the 100th green to card an incredibly impressive 43 (10 holes), 72, 77, 79, 79, 73 for a total score of 423 against a par of 399!
It was great to have so many people in the bar to share the day with at the end and the club felt like one big family. The challenge for us now is to find the next event and make it even bigger and better - which will be hard going!
Finally, for those of you who bought raffle tickets, Stret did the draw with us on Sunday evening in the clubhouse and we'll publish the results shortly - there were lots of winners from Hornsea Golf Club members, so keep an eye out for the results as well as the photos we intend on sharing in the clubhouse in the next week or so.
Thanks again for all your support.
Joe Palmer, Chris Wilson & Leigh Gawley
This is a picture of Leigh's scorecard. He completed every hole and managed to break 80 gross in every round. It included 10 birdies, 60 pars, 26 bogeys, 4 doubles, 18 single putts,7 three putts, 3 lost balls and 70 greens in regulation. Not bad with only 8 clubs in his bag. All note no driver!! Joe and Chris also did well but over 100 holes this is great golf Leigh.

There was a tough wind blowing and lots of golfers struggled with the conditions. The course again was in excellent condition with lots of complimentary comments been passed.

ANOTHER GREAT REVIEW OF OUR COURSE
We received this email earlier in the week and I thought I would share it with you.
Hi, on behalf of the others in our four ball I would like to say thank you for a great day out at your course on Saturday. Helped of course by the lovely weather we had a thoroughly enjoyable round on a truly magnificent course. We've played Hornsea a few times over the years and always been impressed by the state of the course but I think this time was an extra step up and we really felt like a 'million dollars' going around with our humble handicaps! Thank you for such quality service, from booking (and helping my wife along!) through to the excellent hospitality before and after our golf. We will be back!
Kind regards,
Martin Trevaskiss
