Greetings from Stretton Wright
Hornsea Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Golf insurance is something every golfer should have. I have teamed up with Golf Care with a great offer for you all. Please take a moment to have a look and think about the risks you are taking every time you play if you are not covered and also the cost to replace your equipment if it was stolen. You can even take cover for not being able to play and to cover your drinks bill should you make a hole in one!! Click here to learn more.

Big thanks to Chris Wilson and Tom Hague who invited myself and Yvonne up to Witton Castle last week for a one night stay. What a great place it is too with lots to do and the castle is amazing with lots of work going on at the moment to improve it. Yvonne and I went for a walk and got completely lost!!! We had to make a bit of a dash for it when two bee keepers started coming towards us!!! Now with my knee I am not the quickest to jump over a fence!!

I was a little disappointed this Saturday at the amount of people that either did not put a number on their score card on Saturday in the medal or put the wrong number on completely!!! You might all think it is not important but instead of taking 15/20 minutes to finish off the competition it took me nearly 3 hours. Please when entering put your correct number on your card along with your other details, and return your card correctly through the computer.

Congratulation to Leigh Gawley and Rees Brown who have both made it through to the quarter finals of the East Riding Matchplay. Leigh plays against Andy Lockwood in the next round and Rees is up against Andy Woodhead. Good luck boys.

The Open starts today. Will anyone beat Jordan Spieth? I must say if he continues his fantastic form with his putter he will be right up there. Tiger is again talking himself up but will he even make the cut? I would love to see a British winner and there are a few that could go close. Luke Donald, Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood, Justin Rose, Paul Casey, Tommy Fleetwood to mention a few. If I was a betting man though my money would be on Dustin Johnson. I hope you all enjoy watching and may the best man win.

KNOCKOUT COMPETITIONS

It was good to see that all the matches that were due to be played by the 12th July all had results recorded. Well done to all who have got through so far.

GREENS

June has been a very busy month and that has continued into July. The greenkeeping team is well into the mowing routine with all areas maintained on a weekly basis. Fairways, tees, approaches and semi rough are cut twice a week. The greens are cut or rolled (ironed) daily. The rough can take a minimum of three days to cut depending on weather and amount of play. Bunker faces have been trimmed and edged every other week so far and the selected hummocks strimmed as and when required. During the remaining hours we attend to ponds, ditch banks and copses. However we cannot do it all, caring for your course; raking bunkers, divot filling and repairing your pitchmarks would prove very beneficial, also looking after your designated hole! If for example, one member of the greens staff were to spend 10 minutes per green repairing pitchmarks that equates to 3 hours per day, 21 hours per week or 1092 hours per year. At an hourly minimum wage rate, that would be £7098 per year just to repair your pitchmarks!

In late June we aerated the greens with 8mm solid tines to a depth of 100mm. This is vital maintenance relieving surface compaction and allowing air and water movement through the soil profile. Following this we sprayed the first of two wetting agent applications two weeks apart to cure any isolated dry patch. This was tank mixed with humic and fulvic acids to improve turf health through high stress periods. During the interim week the greens also received a turf tonic of seaweed, potassium and liquid fertilizer combined with Primo Maxx, which regulates plant growth.

Finally a word of thanks to Rosie Atkin for her assistance in planting 100 gorse plants to the rear of the men's 12th tee. This should be well established by this time next year.

CAPTAINS CHALLENGE

Well it was another win for myself and Captain Alan this Sunday. Great game though with our challengers Lee Guest and Allan Scarlett taking the game all the way to the last green.

I started birdie, birdie which saw us take a two up lead. A 5/4 by Lee on the 3rd saw our lead cut to one then Allan Scarlett made a great 4/3 on the 6th to take us back to level. Myself and Lee both should have made birdies on the 8th but poor putting saw us only make fives. The 9th though was a win for us with Captain Alan making a solid 4/3 for a front 9 win for us. Lee made a good start to the back 9 with a win on the 10th with a 4/3 but we were soon back in the lead after a par on the 12th was good enough for the win. I do feel the real turning point was a 4 putt by Allan Scarlett on the 13th though which from looking like winning the hole he gifted it to us for us to go 2 up. More good golf from our opponents though saw them win the 15th and 16th with net birdies. A good solid par from myself on the 17th saw us go back into the lead and another par on the last saw us take the victory. Big thanks to both Lee and Allan though as they both made very generous donations to the Captains charity.
