Greetings from Stretton Wright
Hornsea Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

I hope you have all managed to stay warm and dry this week as the weather has definitely changed. I for one really don't like getting up every morning in the dark and taking our dog for a walk with loads of clothes on. We are getting our new winter stock in though and for those of you that often get stuck out in the rain how about getting yourself a Hornsea Golf Club rain cover. They are selling fast though and I only have a limited stock so don't miss out.

Paul Gibson was away on his stag do last weekend, (he has returned in one piece) so I took the junior lesson. 20 kids turned up and we all had a great time. It was great to see a couple of girls there too. All 20 of them could all make great golfers. This is one of the reasons why we are holding the Junior Fundraising Am Am on 25th October. It is filling up fast so if you want to support Junior's at Hornsea please give the shop a ring. It's only £15 per person.

As the ground is starting to soften up and become damp it is a good time of year to start checking your spikes in your golf shoes. I for one will be changing from soft spikes to metal ones. I think it is really important through the winter to make sure you have a good grip whilst playing and walking.

Why not check yours now whilst you are thinking about it.
If they need doing just drop them off in the shop and we shall do them for you.

MEMBERS NOTICE

Many of you will be aware that our Vice Captain, Malcolm Parker, was recently involved in a road accident whilst riding his bicycle. This resulted in a head injury and a stay in hospital.

Although originally expected to be a short stay for observation for concussion, Malcom has remained in hospital for a second week and has undergone procedures to reduce swelling and relieve pressure.

Steve Wray has been a regular visitor and has been keeping us up to date with progress. Although there have been definite signs of improvement, Malcolm remains poorly at this time.

We are sure that all members will join us in wishing Malcolm a full and speedy recovery. Cards and wishes can be left at the Pro Shop, which will then be forwarded to Malcolm's home address or taken to the hospital.

HULL & DISTRICT ALLIANCE

Last Thursday saw the second Hull and District Alliance of the season. Yet again all the Hornsea pairs performed very well with our best score 64 from Stuart Branton and Mark Cooke. This was helped by a fantastic last 9 holes and saw them take 4th place. Unfortunately for Hornsea though we are now 4 shots behind Hull in the overall table as Hull came in with an amazing score of 57!!! The next event will be held on Thursday 1st October at Cave Castle and we have a strong team available.

EAST RIDING ALLIANCE

Yesterday saw the first East Riding Alliance of the season. It was held at Boothferry Golf Club. We had a strong team out of A Rosindale & L Nicholson, S Uzzell & N Wright and S Branton & M Cooke. I shall put a report in next week's newsletter.

KNOCKOUT FINALS DAY

Last Sunday saw 6 games play in the finals day of the knockouts. It is the first time we have tried to have a finals day for a number of years and it was a great success and one that we shall definitely be doing again next year. If you speak to anyone that was involved I'm sure they will all agree. It would be great next year if more finals can be played on finals day but I appreciate if people are away or in more than one final that is not possible. For those that make the finals next year I will be encouraging more supporters and for all players to have a caddy and maybe a referee with each game. Talking of referees, can I give Howard Palmer a big thanks for refereeing the Scratch Cup Final. The order of play was as follows:

8.30 & 1.00 Maw Scratch Cup - Leigh Gawley v Barry Peasgood
1.10 Holmes Ramsden Salver - Martin Champs v Paul Lockwood
1.20 Cutting Cup - Garry Murdoch v James Leonard
1.30 Veterans Cup - Bill Railton v Peter Stamford
1.40 Lotherington Cup - Ross Meggison v Darrell Slingsby
1.50 Terry Hall Cups - Stuart Branton & Mark Cooke v Terry Clappison & Peter Mounfield

What great games they all turned out to be too.

Maw Scratch Cup

Many people would have had Leigh as the easy winner in this 36 hole final as he had recently become the East Riding Matchplay Champion. This was not the case though as Barry was well up for the challenge and after 15 holes in the morning Barry was 3 up and playing very well. After 18 holes Leigh had managed to get one hole back but Barry still led by 2. The first 18 holes would have seen Leigh and Barry if they had been playing a better ball round in 61. Just a shame more people did not go out to watch such great golf. Now I'm not sure but I do feel the break between rounds might have led to Barry stiffening up as when I joined them again on the 28th hole Leigh had turned the game round and was 3 up. The final score was a 6&4 win for Leigh but from what I saw, huge congratulations must go to Barry for making a real game of it

Holmes Ramsden
Another great final with a few twist and turns. When I first met up with them on the 8th, they both held great putts for birdie. It was looking like a tight game but Paul was 2 up. This lead he had extended after 10 holes to 3. Martin didn't give up though and kept on battling and eventually got the better of Paul winning 2&1.

Cutting Cup

I was out on the buggy and was going between the 8th and 9th and when I came across this game I knew straight away by the body language that Garry was struggling. James turned to me and said for a change nothing had gone wrong yet and he was playing well. Playing well, he was 5 up after 8!! Garry had not given up though and made a brave fight back over the next few holes to get back to just been 1 down. James though got his composure back and in the end came out winning 3&1. Interesting talking in the bar afterwards though as both admitted to having an interesting 3rd hole with it been halved in 9!!!

Veterans Trophy
Yet another great game with both players concentrating hard when I got to them in what, up to half way was a very closely fought contest. They both play a similar game with neither of them making silly mistakes and both playing steady golf. Bill then found his putting boots which Peter found hard to match and when Bill's putter is working I know how hot that can become. Bill ended up taking the title 3&2.

Lotherington Cup
- Now I must say from what I saw of this game it looked like it could have been an interesting one. I saw Ross struggling down the 8th hitting shots both right and left handed and when Darrell told me it was his 2nd ball I said this hole must be yours then. He turned to me and said well mine is under that bush so it is still anyone's hole!

Then coming down the last Darrell was down the middle and Ross was in the middle of the practice ground. As we watched from the clubhouse you could tell it was a tight game. Darrell knocked his second shot down and Ross hooked another which finished just near the back wall of the shop. Ross looked in trouble. A fantastic flop shot over the trees though brought Ross right back into it. Darrell in the end did have a putt to win the game on the 18th but it lipped out. Back up the first they went and Darrell again was looking good as Ross had topped his tee shot and Darrel had hit a good one. In the end though a pulled 2nd shot by Darrell, and a couple of bad chips, let Ross in and take the title on the 19th.

Terry Hall Cups

The only better ball final that could be arranged today turned out to be a good one. The banter between the 4 started on the 1st tee and when I got to them on the 8th tee it was still going on with I would say Terry Clappison coming out on top!! The game was with Stuart and Mark though as after 7 they were 2 up. A birdie down the 8th though brought Peter and Terry right back into the game though in what was a real ding dong match. In the end though the game was decided by two putts from distance from Mark Cooke on the 11th and 17th which from what Terry told me both would have ended up off the green at the other side if they had not gone in!!
This in the end led to a 2&1 victory for Stuart and Mark.

TUESDAY CLUB

Week 24 and the last Tuesday Club of yet another great season. In today's final round at last Paul Robinson showed some form and won today with 40pts having a better back 9 than Bill Grant who also managed 40pts. Neil Jordan managed to win the nearest the pin on the 18th. I shall do a full report next week on the overall standings.

ROLSTON BAR TROPHY

Players who have carded 8 rounds or more in this year's Tuesday Club are eligible to play in the Rolston Bar Trophy which is played in conjunction with the Mid Week Stableford today. A presentation will follow this event for all the prize winners. I shall put a full report in next week.

It's been another busy week on the course. Grass is still growing and all playing areas are still been cut on a regular basis. The greens really have recovered well and we have had lots of fantastic comments about them this last week. Leaves are starting to fall now though and before long that will take up most of the time collecting them. The greens staff are trying hard at the moment to get all hedges, ditch banks and the long grass between the copses cut. It is amazing how much wildlife this disturbs though when this is done. Whilst I was at the 10th taking these pictures I saw lots of frogs and voles all trying to get away from the machinery. It really is amazing how much wildlife there is on the course.
