As you will be reading this newsletter this week, I would think I will be on my way back from the Golf Trade Show in Harrogate. I wonder if anything will impress me this year. Remember last year it was a coffee machine!! Maybe this year it will be something to do with golf!!
It was nice to go out with quite a few members last Thursday to celebrate Chris Wilson 50th birthday. We all had a great meal at Sonali Spice in Hornsea. I have had a lot of people telling me to try a fish curry for quite a while but never really fancied it. Last Thursday though I decided to give it a go and I was well impressed and shall definitely be having it again. Garlic chilli fish Balti I went for. Yvonne wasn't too impressed with me the though and I spent most of Friday sucking on mints!!!
I mentioned last week about all the fantastic work some of our members have been doing around the course. The next project to be tackled will be to tidy the hut near the 8th green by re-cladding it like the one on the 3rd and 5th tees. I am sure it will make a big difference to how it currently looks. Please if any of you have any ideas on how you could improve things have a word with me.
I know autumn isn't Gareth and his staffs favourite time of year, due to forever picking up and moving leaves but at the moment whilst travelling around the course the colours are fantastic as the leaves change colour. I took these pictures on Tuesday and also found these rather amazing fungi at the back of the 16th green. No idea if they are edible, but I would say not!! If you have taken or want to take some pictures of the course please send them to me. Any good ones I shall put on here and they will also go on the Golf Club website.
Some of you may have played with or seen Pete Stamford's unusual golf trolley that he uses. I believe he brought it from South Africa. Well I think I have been sent a picture of a pull trolley that beats it. Whilst away golfing Mark Cooke played at the Renaissance course in North Berwick and hired this little beauty!!
CAPTAINS CHALLENGE
Well last Sunday saw our toughest challenge so far this year with Norman Broxham and Doug Lloyd giving us a great game. Both Alan and myself played quite nicely on the front nine and even though both Norman and Doug had held some great putts to keep themselves in some holes we were looking quite comfortable at 2 up. The halfway house stop definitely seemed to inspire them though as they quickly won 2 holes as we started back and they were both fitting in so well together.
In the end though a great finish from myself managed to seal our victory 2&1. We even ended up with 9 bits too. I was personally round in 68 and I am sure Norman will be talking about the eagle I made on the 16th for a while as it is the second year in a row that I have done that when the game was close on both occasions.

HULL & DISTRICT ALLIANCE
Last Thursday saw the 3rd event of the season which was held at Cave Castle. A fine score of 64 from Hull won the event and has extended Hull's lead in the Victor Hurdle to 6 shots. Hornsea are tied in 2nd place with Cave Castle after Gareth Williams and Adrian Bird produced Hornsea's best score with a 66 which was good enough for a 5th place. The next event will be held at Ganstead on 15th October. 14 players were needed and I had 19 on the list. Thank you for all your support and I shall always try to pick what I believe is Hornsea's strongest team. I played at Cave Castle with our Club Chairman, Paul Lockwood, Club Captain, Alan Barker and the Hull and District President, Lindsay Ward. It was nice to be playing in such esteem company.
EAST RIDING ALLIANCE
The East Riding Alliance was played at Brough yesterday and I have yet to receive a full report. I shall put one in next week. www.eryga.co.uk
GREENS
As mention earlier one of the main jobs at the moment is trying to keep the course clear of leaves and this will continue until probably Christmas. This is the first job on each hole each morning. I am sure if you play later in the day plenty more leaves will have dropped. I took this picture of Paul Lazenby removing the pine needles on the 13th.
All the long grass has now been cut and collected and this should encourage finer grasses to grow next year. The greens will be receiving a granular fertilizer which will harden them up for the winter and the tees during this next week will be hollow cored weather permitting.
