Greetings from Stretton Wright
Hornsea Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

I know we are nearing the end of October and so far the weather has not been too bad. Looking at the long term forecast for the winter though it could be a wet one. At the moment we have some great deals on waterproofs to keep you warm and dry. Why not pop in and take a look next time you play.

Well it is always nice to hear that members and visitors like reading my weekly newsletter. I like it even more when people reply or give me information to help me. Well this last week the two members that joined here in the summer Mike and Jen Guidry contacted me from their home in Texas. It was great to hear from them and that they are also enjoying reading about what is going on at Hornsea. No doubt they will now be enjoying much better weather than us now!! Mike sent me a link to their clubs website in Texas and it looks very nice. Click here to have a look.

Talking of members sending me things. I did like this that Phil Coates sent me. A very interesting local rule from Richmond Golf Club from 1940!! And, you thought you were a tough weather golfer. The notice below was posted adjusting rules at a golf club in Britain in 1940. You have to admit --- these guys really had to like the game to play! German aircraft from Norway would fly on missions to attack northern England. Because of the icy weather conditions, the barrels of their guns had a small dab of wax in the muzzle to protect them from clogging with ice. In addition to attacking industrial or other targets close to golf courses, as they crossed the coast, they would clear their guns by firing a few rounds at the golf courses. Golfers were urged to take cover!!

1.) Players are asked to collect Bomb and Shrapnel splinters to save these causing damage to the mowing machines.
2.) In competitions, during gunfire, or while bombs are falling, players may take cover without penalty for
ceasing play.
3.) The positions of known delayed-action bombs are marked by red flags placed at reasonably, but not guaranteed safe distance therefrom.
4.)Shrapnel/and/or bomb splinters on the Fairways, or in Bunkers within a club's length of a ball may be moved without penalty, and no penalty shall be incurred if a ball is thereby caused to move accidentally.
5.) A ball moved by enemy action may be replaced, or if lost or destroyed, a ball may be dropped not nearer the hole without penalty.
6.) A ball lying in a crater may be lifted and dropped not nearer the hole, preserving the line to the hole without penalty.
7.) A player whose stroke is affected by the simultaneous explosion of a bomb may play another ball from the same place. Penalty, one stroke.

ANCHORING OF PUTTER

I know this doesn't affect many Hornsea members as I know there are only a few of you that use long putters but this link is definitely worth a read as it comes into effect in the New Year. Click here to read.

JUNIOR GOLF CAMPS

Well, believe it or not, half term is just around the corner and Paul will once again be running his popular junior camps, but this time a slightly different set up. The first camp will be on Tuesday 27th October and is exclusively for Junior Academy members of Hornsea. He is holding another on Friday 30th October for any juniors in the area. These sessions are very popular, so if you would like to put your child/grandchild's name down then please contact Paul on 07745 543940 or the shop on 01964 532020.

LADIES AWAY WEEKEND

Last weekend our ladies section had an away trip to Kenwick Park. This was organised by the Hornsea Lady Captain Wendy Lockwood. Now I have heard a few rumours about what went on, but as they say, what goes on tour, stays on tour!!!

DAILY MAIL FOURSOMES

As mentioned before Hornsea members Leigh Gawley and Rees Brown qualified for the final stages of the Daily Mail Foursomes. Unfortunately they failed at bringing the top prize home but it sounded like they had a couple of great days at The Forrest of Arden. With winning the Bailey Foursomes here again this year I am sure they will after more of the same next year. Well done to both of you though for doing so well this year.

HULL & DISTRICT ALLIANCE

Last Thursday the gents Hull and District Alliance was held at Ganstead Park. At the start of the day Hull were leading by 6 shots so Hornsea needed a good score. Conditions were quite good for the time of year but scoring wasn't easy. Hornsea's best score of the day was an 8 under, 64 from myself and Gareth Williams. We both played quite well and fitted in when the other was in trouble. When we finished I must say I thought that score might be good enough to win the event but we came up one shot short as a 9 under 63 came in from Hainsworth Park. The best Hull could do though was a 67 so there lead is now only 3 with the next event at Hessle on 29th October.  www.hullanddistrictgolf.co.uk

EAST RIDING ALLIANCE

Another fantastic result for a Hornsea pair in the East Riding Alliance at Kirkbymoorside yesterday with a win for Steve Uzzell and Sam Middleton with a great score of 63. Really well played boys. Unfortunately our other pair didn't fare so well and shot a 3 over.

Hornsea are in 3rd place overall but Scarborough North Cliff are looking good. Hopefully this will be a good start to the week for Steve Uzzell as he heads out to Spain today for the Euro Pro Tour Championship. Good luck Steve. Look at the website to see the current standings. www.eryga.co.uk

FANTASY GOLF LEAGUE

Well some of you a few weeks ago might remember me saying about how well David Prescott did by coming 4th overall and what a great achievement that was. Ian Sizer (pictured) last week improved on Davids 4th place by actually finishing 1st overall. Now I for one think that is amazing. Well done Ian. This result wins him a prize and also qualifies him for the Top 10 Challenge. Please take a look (click here) to see all the prizes that are available.

GREENS

I am very pleased with the condition of the greens, remaining firm and dry. They have recovered well from the early maintenance work and have a good covering of grass going into winter. However with the current mild and damp mornings disease pressure is high. We will monitor for signs of disease while these conditions persist and possibly spray a preventative fungicide in the process. Although growth is slowing the course is still requiring regular mowing. This combined with the autumn leaf fall will keep us very busy for the foreseeable future. Towards the end of this month, we will probably require an application of worm suppressant and iron to all the tee tops and approaches. It will reduce the amount of unsightly castings that occur.

We have recently applied a granular feed to the greens. This will enhance colour, balance turf health and harden the sward for winter.

Aeration will continue through winter with the greens being slit weekly weather permitting, again aiding air and water movement through the profile. It is also my intention to hollow core the tees and approaches as well as vertidrain the fairways.

I would like also to give thanks to Malcolm Hester for staining the path edging on 4th and 5th. Also, to Colin Evans and Peter Bridges for their efforts recladding the shelter on the third tee.

Gareth Williams, Course Director

Some of you that played earlier this week might have been a little worried about the fairways in places. This damage was caused by trying to vertidrain the fairways. This is best done when the ground is dry but unfortunately in some places is was maybe a little too dry and caused the turf to lift. It has now all been repaired and will soon recover. We have had a problem this week also with people going onto the course and causing problems. Tee markers have gone missing, footprints all over some bunkers and just generally making a mess. This is all happening in the top field and it is adults as the shoe size is about a 10. If you are passing the tower on an evening and see any cars parked can you please pass the car registration number on to me please.

SENIORS OPEN

Wednesday 14th October saw Hornsea Golf Club hold its Seniors Open which is organised by our own Senior's section. Malcolm Hester with his team of helpers put a great deal of time and effort into making sure the day is a success, for all that take part. The most fantastic rainbow greeted the early starters but condition where tough with a strong wind blowing. A few heavy showers during the day made sure it was a tough test for all that played. It was fantastic to sit on the desk whilst checking cards and listen to all the great comments about the condition of the course. If you played make sure you book early for next year as many already have. To those that contributed to the halfway house pot it raised £80 for the Hornsea Captains charity, The Mark Pollock Trust and thanks go to Patsy Yeates and Jo Roach for all their hard work. Please find below all the results. Those highlighted in yellow won a prize. They are behind the bar at Hornsea.

Yesterday saw the Seniors hold a better ball competition before their AGM. This was won by our chef Paul Nelson and Alan Johnson. If you look at the tv I think they had a little extra help!!!

Over the past year the Seniors section has held a couple of events to raise money for the club. At yesterday's AGM a cheque was presented to our Club Chairman Paul Lockwood for £2,600 by the Seniors Captain Gordon McGlynn. That is a great effort and many thanks go to all the Seniors involved in raising the money which will go towards further improvements on and around the course.

THE BIG DAY IS NEARLY HERE

If you are wondering where Paul Gibson is over the next few days he is away sorting a few last minute things before he gets married on Saturday. I am sure everyone that reads this newsletter would like to wish Paul and Jane all the best and hope they have a fantastic day. I shall be there so I shall have some pictures for you all next week. Good luck pal.
