Twenty-four members of Hornsea seniors attended Kirkbymoorside Golf club on a cloudy and windy day on Wednesday 4 June, for Seniors Captain Andy Caley's away day.

Most courses have improved immensely since the recent rain and Kirkbymoorside presented in fine condition, with the greens running really well and the fairways cut quite short and providing a perfect surface for ball striking.

The conditions made scoring tough, with a strong wind blowing throughout the day and the severe slopes on some of the greens proving a different test than the greens at Hornsea.

The format for the day was an individual stableford, from the yellow tees off a 95% handicap.

Altogether there were six fourballs making up the twenty four competitors.

There were prizes available for the top three scores, two nearest the pin prizes on the 1st and nearest in two on the 18th PLUS a ‘blind pairs’, where two players were randomly drawn together with the top combined score winning a prize.

The first hole at Kirkbymoorside is a short par 3 and the first player out was Senior Captain Andy Caley, who managed to put his ball within 12ft, to give all those following a tough target to snatch the nearest the pin away from the Captain.

The difficulty that the course provided was reflected in the scores posted, with no player managing to achieve 36 points.

Four players tied for 4th place with 30 points, one point behind 3rd placed Keith Nelson with 31 points.

Tying for 1st place were Wayne Sutton and Paul Hancock with 32 points.

No-one managed to beat the Captains tee shot on the 1st hole, so Andy Caley took home the nearest the pin prize, with John Milne taking the nearest in two prize on the 18th hole.

Jim Morton was praying for a partner with a decent score and his prayers were answered when he drew joint winner Wayne Sutton. Jim and Waynes points total of 60 points was enough to secure them the ‘blind pairs’ prize.

The day was rounded off with a lovely meal in Kirkbymoorsides clubhouse.
