The Hornsea GC Seniors Winter League was planned to comprise ten fixtures between early November and mid-February. The golf and weather Gods saw this plan and had a mighty chuckle.  As the Spring/Summer fixtures start on 6th March the Winter League had to be limited to eight matches. The eighth and final round took place on Monday 23rd February.

Dry, windy conditions and a course fully open led to a strong turnout of twenty golfers. The match, as with all the others , was a qualifier played from the orange tees with 100% handicap allowance.  At 9.15 Seniors Captain Simon Blakeley joined Mick Cadmore, Alan Preece and Garry Lewis on the first tee.  All Simon would like to say about his round is that he putted well and parred the 6th for only the second time in eighteen months. Other than that - as the police say - nothing to see here, move along please. He is currently writing The Definitive Guide to Hornsea GC Bunkers which will be available in all good bookshops. Mick Cadmore, after griping that he couldn't score well from the orange tees, put on a cracking display of driving and approach play to come in with thirty-five points. Had his putter been a little 'warmer' he'd have scored forty-plus. The rest of the group enjoyed applauding Mick as they 'spoiled a good walk'.

The second group out was billed as 'The Kevin Gates Show'. Now comfortably back from sick leave and a foreign holiday, Kev shot a stunning thirty-eight points, apparently without ever getting out of second gear. Irritatingly consistent leftie Keith Nelson scored a solid thirty-two points to hang on to second place in the league. Col Porrett and Jim Postill provided moral support and played some decent golf.

Following The Kevin Gates Show onto the stage was one of our regular favourites; The Shaun Goodwin Extravaganza! In this group, Ron Wainman needed a great score to compete with Keith for second place. On this occasion, however, he joined Paul Hancock and John Milne as 'Pips' to Shaun's Gladys Knight. Shaun stormed it again with thirty-eight points to cement his already practically unassailable place at the top of the league table.

The next group out featured the double-act (think 'Chuckle Brothers') of Wayne Sutton and Simon Cheesmore. Each scored an impressive thirty-three points. Simon's score meant that he leapfrogged Trevor White and Jim Postill into joint fourth place in the table. In the same group Dave Miller suffered a broken buggy and Ray McKie a broken spirit.

In the final group Bruce Tyler shot his best score of the league with thirty-six points (after a recount) to tie fourth place with Mr Cheesmore. Playing partners Tom Elder, Trevor White and Jim Allen were so dazzled by Bruce's talent that their scores weren't up to their usual standard. (Bruce, thanks for the fiver).

Huge thanks to everyone that turned out for the Winter League matches and battled the elements. Roll on Springtime.
